Help me with a .22 mag queation, please.

Howdy,
I've got a bet going with a buddy of mine concerning .22 mag out of a .22 LR revolver. Perhaps I could get someone with more knowledge to clarify.

OK, I have a .22LR six shooter, it's old and made by Hy Hunter. It's in decent shape, mechanically it's fine, just a bit holster worn. I have shot LR and short out of it but a buddy who knows everything is trying to tell me that .22 mag will work in this pistol. I say it won't due to pressure issues. He says it will.

So gang, who's winning the cash?

You are winning, but it has nothing to do with pressure.

Unless you have an extra .22 Mag cylinder, they won't fit in the .22 LR chambers at all, so you can't shoot them.

.22 WRM shells are bigger around then .22 RF shells.

Guns that fire both, like the Ruger Single-Six, are all the same strength, but they come with two interchangable cylinders.
One is for .22 LR.
One is for .22 WMR.

I know pretty little about .22 mag as I've never even seen a cartridge in person as I have little interest in owning one.

.22 Magnum is where it is at. Very nice cartridge. Especially in a rifle. I can't wait to try out the Kel-Tec PM30. I like the idea of 30 rounds .22 Magnum in an auto pistol.

So is Eb1. .22 mag is a great rifle cartridge, and it does great in the Ruger Single Six. And I, too, can't wait to try out a PM30.

Geez.. You'll have A LOT of iterest in the .22 MAG after you shoot one... That's a great cartridge!

My .22 revolver has both cylinders and I've shot both out of it. The extra $$ for 22WMR keeps the 22LR cylinder in the revolver. Most of my shooting with is is just plinking and I can shoot at least 4-5 more rounds per $ with 22LR vs 22WMR

The big drawback to the .22 Mag is, as always, cost. They cost a lot more than .22 LR and, while they have major advantages, the extra cost is not worth it for plinking.

I know that the cost of the WMR is much more, but after you run $15.00 worth of LR thru your Single Six, it's way too much fun to follow up with 24 rounds of WMR!!

Haven't seen it mentioned yet, so I will. Another item to remember is that the convertible revolvers with the magnum cylinders also have a .224 barrel diameter instead of the usual .223, so they are really sized for the magnum cartridge and not ideally for the regular .22's.
