I have never had much experience with AR's and need some advice on mounting a scope. The gun is a Stag model 1 and I would like to have something that is fairly easy to swap between the scope and the carry handle. I have a 3-9x50 scope and the high rings I had didn't even come close to clearing the hand guard. What would be a fairly cheap but reliable mounting system for this application. Thanks in advance!

i say check out the A.R.M.S rings with the throw levers, try not to go too cheap, cheap rings ona scope means cheap performance, you will be good to go with the arms rings.
I use GG&G Throw lever plates for ACOG scopes and for my AccuPoint Scope.
These throwlever mounts, like the A.R.M.S. mounts, allow you to quickly remove the scope and transition to back up iron sights if the scope goes bad.
If you just want a decent throw lever scope mount that you can quickly remove to install the carry handle sight, I recommend an American Defense one piece throw lever mount.
These are available for one inch and 30MM scopes.
Both of these mounts can be had from Brownells or direct from the manufacturer for under $200.
One nice advantage to throwlever mounts is that they cannot be overtorqued to the receiver rail.
Tighten the adjustments down too much and they will not fit the rail and lock down.

gg&g makes good stuff to and i reccomend them as well.
Those look great but I was looking for something for 20-30 bucks. I guess I'll have to forget the detachable part for that but that's OK too. It just seems that HIGH rings were way too short so what else is needed for more height?

You will need a riser plate and there are many choices available.
I don't want to sound rude or snobbish, please don't take this in that way, but, you will not be able to correctly mount a scope on an AR type rifle for twenty bucks.
A decent riser will cost minimum, about $40 and good set of rings will run $30 and up.
You can find some very inexdpesive Chinese made stuff out there, generally it falls under the "Famous Maker" line of products.
If you choose this route, you will get exactly what you will pay for.
Satisfaction in the end will not be present.
Fair and honest warning.
Scrimp and save if you must, but buy the best you can justify.

Yankee Hill mini risers are pretty decent and offer a big advantage if you are trying to mount a really long scope or a really short scope and are having trouble gaining correct spacing on a regular riser.
The leapers scope mount is one of the ones i was warning about in my previous post.
Cheap they are, in every way.
One advantage a full length riser offers is a bit more structural rigidity to the flattop receiver.
Because the receiver is so thin at the mounting grooves, rings mounted directly to the upper tend to flex around a bit and you will get some suprising wild shots.
The scope plate adds more solidity and wild grouping usually goes away unless you have a bad barrel.

Ok, The riser was what I was looking for. I'll shop around a bit now that I know what I need. I had seen the Leapers stuff but had also seen some of the reviews it got. I don't mind spending a little extra for a better product but $200 on a gun that I don't really like to shoot seems excessive. Thanks for the tips!!!

U need to to trade that Stag in for an Olympic Arms. Then u could afford a decent scope.

I have the Wilson Combat 1 piece mount on my DPMS Sportical. Scope is a 1.5-6X40 for reference. Hand guard is stock and it clears A OK
Also, I can remove and replace the optic and mount from the flat top and the scope maintains zero.
Edit: Many are leass than $100. Mine goes for $80 nib. Though after some searching I got it for $50 shipped from a real nice guy in NC from ar15.com
