Here's the problem, I have a Savage model 340 bolt action chambered in 30-30. My particular rifle did not come from the factory drilled and tapped for the side mount. It has since been drilled and tapped by "someone" in an odd way. There are only two holes instead of four and they are higher on the action than normal (the wood of the stock has not been disturbed) also they are larger then normal (number ten holes). The weaver, B-square and williams side mounts will not work as they throw the scope all the way over the action to the right side in the way of round ejection. I find it really hard to believe a smith would have just randomly drilled and tapped these holes without having a side mount to fit the hole pattern. My problem is that all of this was likely done long ago before they standardized the mounting of scopes. Instead of drilling and tapping more holes in my action I'd like to find the original mount this thing was drilled for but need some help getting to that. I'm new to the Highroad and all help is greatly appreciated, Mike

Can anyone tell me where else I can look to get some help on this. I have talked to weaver, B-square, and williams none of them even know where to send me

thank you all for the many responses to my question????? I find this site no more useful then any other unless I guess I were looking to brag, argue, or debate some issue with a bunch of self proclaimed experts

absolutely sure on williams. theirs and B-square both use the same hole pattern as the weaver #1.

I'll try to post pictures if that will help

The two holes could be for an older 3/4" diameter scope with
attached mounts. These were not good when new.
Have you considered plugging the two holes and using a weaver
or williams mount? You would have to drill and tap 3 more holes.
But this would allow you to use a modern 1" scope.

not interested in any more drilling and tapping at $25 per hole it's more then the ole thing is worth. this thing had to have been drilled and tapped for a specific mount and I'd really like to find out what mount that is. I'm also trying to age this rifle by seriel number if you know where that can be done

If 25 is more than it's worth then it isn't worth the ammo to shoot in it. Either retire the bubba'd up gun or get it done right and enjoy the firearm for what it is.
Simple as that.

Cheers

My model 340 has 4 holes in it with and uses the Weaver Side 1" mount. I don't know if that helps. I may be able to get pictures tomorrow if that will help.
