I have a pre-64 (should be about 1949 or 50 according to serial #) and it has some Weaver mounts on it now. I was wondering if some Mod 70 expert could tell me if the mount holes were drilled and tapped post factory production or holes were drilled at factory. Cant seem to find where people sell pre-64 Mod 70 mounts. My guess is that they did not come drilled from factory.

I would like to mount another scope on this old rifle and am not a huge fan of Weaver mounts and I don't think they are high enough to accomodate the scope bell even if I did like them. Would like to put two peice Talley's on it.

Any advice here?

Measure carefully in decimals the distance between the hole centers on front and rear. The rear bridge was usually tapped by 1949. I will then suggest how to proceed.;)

.860 screw spacing is the modern (currently available) Pre and post 64 Model 70 bases as far as I know with also the .440 REAR base spacing available, which was used on some models. I have an old Bhuler model 70 mount and bases new in the box and will check out the spacing for it. I have replaced most of my pre and post Model 70s with Warne Maxima bases to allow quick release rings to switch out or easily remove scopes.
