I traded a Mossy 500 for a Maverick 88 Field plus some cash, and today out of about 16 12 gauge remington game loads, 2 failed to fire! I ejected them to find the firing pin hadn't hit them hard enough to go off, this NEVER happened in my 500 Persuader, and I put hundreds of shells through it w/o a hitch, the 88 before I got it had only 100 shells of winchester target ammo through it.

Try a different shell dude, the primers could be set too deep to get hit enough to go off. Heck just look at the 2 that didn't go bang and look at some that did and some of another kind. If the primer is way too far in you should be able to see it.

Try out another brand and see if you have the same issues. If you still have problems post back.

Out of over 500 birdshot loads, and numerous buckshot and slugs, I only had my Maverick not go bang 3 times. All 3 times were cheapo bird shot loads and the primer was visibly too far in.

If it's indeed a bad mainspring, it's a two minute fix. Just buy the part (gunbroker is best on prices), make sure your trigger group is uncocked, remove the rearmost pin in the trigger group and switch the springs.

I'm betting on it being the ammo, though, as Jo said. Unless someone intentionally screwed with your mainspring, the odds of it being bad or going bad at that age are pretty remote.

I believe it was cheap ammo, already retried the ones that didn't go bang, and they went bang the second time round, I'm going with primers too far in, as Remington Express Long range works fine.
