Hi everybody! I am a new member here but have always been impressed with the knowledge I have been able to obtain here so I decided to join and see if I was able to get any help for a question I couldn't find very definitive answers on. I recently bought a Norinco Mak 90 with a stamped receiver in 7.62x39. I knew it was rare because it had a flat receiver in the back and an original norinco side folding stock. The furniture is all red Bakelite or fiberglass with red scales on the side folder. It is in very good condition. However, it doesn't have a norinco stamp on the receiver or anywhere that I can find. Penned on the side is 'mak 90 621xxx' and underneath '7.62x39mm' and underneath that is 'made in china by norinco' 'csi Los Angeles CA'. It is definitely a norinco I have had lots of AKs and I can tell. But I'm not sure what model this is and what the value may be on it. I have pictures but I can't figure out how to post them but will send them if you would like! Thank you very very much for any help I can get!

Haha! That is no lie unfortunately. I practically stole this one with the way today's market is. I might also mention that I took it to a gun show in Tulsa, OK and was thinking about selling it until more than one dealer told me that if it was theirs that they wouldn't sell it.
I don't recall seeing any MAK-90 Sporters with folding stocks back in the days when they were being imported, just the regular AK-style wood stocks pre-Ban, and the clunky thumbhole stocks during the ban. My pre-ban MAK has the regular pistol-grip wood stock, but as a "Sporter", came minus the flash hider, bayonet lug, or under-barrel cleaning rod. As I recall, it was $279 when I bought it pre-AWB. Maybe the bakelite folding stock is a post-Ban add on?

Pictures? I bet its an add on. Hope you didnt pay more than $700. Even with all this craziness there are still deals out there. I got two Mak 90's and a Draco for $1500 in february.

Also, it may be worth mentioning as well that it has a threaded barrel, 14x1mm left hand thread, I know that it is not aftermarket threading because there are slight grind marks where it looks like the nut covering the threads was ground off, a cleaning rod, but no bayonet lug.

That is one of the first MAK-90 models imported. A shipment of Type 56S rifles was imported before the 1989 ban but did not clear customs in time. The ATF compromised with the importer and allowed them to be released as long as a few modifications were done. So a muzzle nut was welded in place, the bayonet lug ground off, and all markings except the serial number were ground off and rewritten with the MAK-90 model number.
The muzzle attachment might be a bit of a sticky problem. It's one of those 'muzzle brakes' that just happen to also work well as a flash suppressor. A brake is legal, a flash suppressor is not unless you install a number of compliance parts.
These aren't exactly collector's items but they certainly are rare.

Wow! Thank you! That's without question the most detailed answer about my particular gun I have gotten so far! If the muzzle brake is going to be a problem I will just take the dang thing off and put a slant brake on it. Any idea what it might be worth? I'm guessing just as much as any other MAK 90 more than likely...however I love the feel of this gun, I doubt I will ever sell it. But...I do live by the saying 'Everything is for sale for the right price'
