Norinco MAK-90?

I just bought my first AK type rifle, it is a Norinco MAK-90. I got in the original packaging styrofoam with the owners manual and accesories for $600. Not a bad deal for the times I think.

My question is, what years were these rifles imported? Mine has an 8 digit serial number starting with QH and ending with 95. It was imported by Sportarms of Miami, FL. I read somewhere online that no more were imported after 94 and that the last two digits of the serial number where the year it was imported. How can this be?

You got the thumbhole stock? If so, it's most likely post 1994 (post ban).
These are pretty robust rifles. Not as pretty as some of the other AK type rifles (Hungarian FEG's are the prettiest, IMHO), but MAK-90's definitely are tough, fun rifles!

I paid about $200 for mine, back in '94 or '95. Considering the BS going on now...yepper, you paid a decent price.

in my opinion and i have been thru alot of AK's

it is made in an AK factory along with the military AK's

not some century arms monkey shop.

they have thicker receivers and although they are

neutered by the thumbhole stock and the bayonet

lug is ground off.

but if the receiver has a straight cut and not

a slant cut its easy to convert as long as you keep your

922r compliance.

Mine has 7 digits...don't believe your last numbers 94 means the year, I bought mine new back around 93 for around 250.00...these
are very good....I was told only ones that have a 1.5 mil. thickness, (reciever) others only have 1. also they have a chrome barrel...i beieve they just stopped imports a little while ago an are a real collectors choice now...3 wks ago I saw one for 700.00...you did good on this one.

congrats on your first ak variant, my first ak is a nhm90 or aka mak90, but in 5.56 just picked up another couple days ago 56s-1. the norincos have one of the best trigger feel you will find in any variant. i also have a thumbhole stock and think they are pretty cool looking. lets see some pics

Thanks everyone. Mine does have the thumbhole stock which I would like to change.

Everywhere I've read so far says the prefix or suffix on the serial number is the year of import. Really curious how mine could be 95. Does anyone know of any websites I may find more info on this?

Also I was wondering does it hurt to dry fire the gun as it doesn't have a bolt hold open and I sometimes lose count? I have always heard it isn't good to dry fire any gun.

Dry firing was on another thread a while back, not real good on some .22, an a few others...dry firing your AK or AR won't hurt it at all.
