I traded for a Springfield 1911 A1. It's marked "Factory Comp" near the muzzle. The gun is in EXCELLENT shape. Only one issue. The guy I got it from got it from the original owner, who was an idiot. The comp has been takent off.

Now, the threads on the barrel seem to be fine. Nothing else was done to the gun, no issues with the internals. Fires and functions smooth, slick, great. How would I go about either:

A) Getting a replacement compensator

or

B) Getting a different barrel that will fit flush, instead of sticking out a half inch/inch?

Which one should I do? Again, the gun is a nice one and seems to have no issues whatsoever. I think I want to keep it. The grips and adjustable trigger are both pretty nice.

The only thing I might add are night sights (the adjustable ones are okay, though) and maybe an extended beavertail.

I'd say YES to both..

I put a comp on my 1911, and YES, lots of talk how it's not effective on a 45 acp, but I don't care. I like it, I wish it was actually threaded to the barrel.

but if you are going to carry.. shorter is better.. so have a smith fit a new wolf barrel.

Maybe Fuff or Sam will interject here, but I believe that fitting a barrel to a slide, the barrel lugs are what get adjusted to fit. Once a standard barrel is fit, you should be able to swap back and forth from the compensated barrel to a standard barrel as you like.

I had a PDP Defender in the 1990s (a comped Springfield).

You should contact Springfield. You probably need to send it back and see what they can do. Maybe they can add it back. If they don't have the comp to fit that barrel anymore, though, a new barrel/comp setup may have to be installed.

I'd take some detailed pics and email them to the Springer CUstom Shop for an idea of what they can do for you.
