I recently bought a (very) used Remington Speedmaster 552. It shot fine, and cycled ammo with only one FTF in about 100 rounds. It showed a lot of carbon build and I cleaned it.

I downloaded the intruction from Remington's web site, and removed all of the build up, but now it won't cock the hammer when it cycles.:uhoh:

It cycles the round, and chambers the next round, but it's not cocked. I can cycle by hand, and it ejects the unfired cartridge, chambers the next one, and fires fine, but doesn't automatically cock the hammer.

Any suggestions? I'm a newbie, so it could be something very obvious. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
TIA,

I once "knew someone who knew someone who knew someone" who had a Remington 552.

They had played with the internals and it would fire two shots in full auto mode and then jam up so tight that they would have to disassemble it down to it's small parts.

It sounds like you've got a worn hammer/sear engagement but that's just a guess.

When I first got my Remington 552 about 20 years ago, it had plenty of problems with cycling and firing pin strikes. I did a very thorough cleaning and it worked fine. I find that every 500-600 rounds that I have to take it apart and give it a real cleaning and then I have no problems with it. I also use some pretty cheap WalMart ammo and that might be part of the problem.
It sounds like you have a reassembly problem. Take out those pins on the receiver so that the trigger group comes out. Give it a real good cleaning and be careful when you reassemble it.
Good luck!

BTW. My 552 does 1/2" groups at 50 yards. It is a fun plinker!
