hello i am new to the bolt action world and i have a remington 700 sps tactical 20 inch threaded barrel with a 1:10 twist. i just dont like the stock and i was wondering if just any stock would work with it or if i have to get a certain type of stock?

welcome to thr!

I don't like the sps stock either. some do, lots don't. several companies make stocks for the 700 action, generally all you need to know is long or short action, and make sure the 'tactical' barrel will fit.

HS precision and bell and carlson are popular choices, I went with HS

thank you i like this site everyone is very nice on it !!!! sorry for my stupid questions but what is the difference between long action and short action?

Unluckywolf, I to do not care for the Houge stock either. Pillar bedded, free floating on a bipod my rifle shoots good but just to flexable for me.Will change it out for a B&C A2 or something this winter.

By the way also being a junior member here, welcome to the forum. deadeye

some cartridges are longer than others, and require an appropriately sized action.

.223 and .308 are short action, so if you go to hs or b&c, just look for 700 action, in short action if you have one of those calibers, and then check with them to make sure the barrel will clear since 'tactical' barrels are usually heavy. a lot of stocks accomidate heavy barrels.

no stupid questions here, just people learning. I think I asked the same question...

yea that something i noticed deadeye, it flexes when you put the rifle down on the bipods i like the look of the Remington 700 Varmint/Tactical Stock Rem 700 Sa V/T Stock
but does anyone have it? if so how does it feel and do you have a picture of it

like I said, I went with HS precision (the bc felt a little heavy to me, the forend was too square for any offhand and i liked the grip on the HS better)

that said, lots of people like the bc, and for good reason. some because of the weight even. I'm sure they will chime in.

in the meantime, i know there are some pictures of it in this thread (mine is in there too)

another question i have asked gunsmiths but i dont ever get a reply i am a lefty and i shoot a righty gun i was wondering if i could just mod a stock so the safety is on the left side but keep the bolt stays the same or if thats a no go because of the trigger is attached to the action

I took mine off before I shot it or marred it up. I took it to Hogue, which is not too far away and complained , I got the Aluminum framed stock Remington SHOULD have put on for the cost difference ($75) , I LIKE the rubber overmolded stock A LOT. But I sure want the aluminum bedding frame in it!
