Hello, long time board stalker and first time poster. I have been reading up on the idea of a scout rifle, as described by the late Jeff Cooper. While I have done a good deal of research on the topic, I am pretty new at modifications (longtime gun owner but generally leave everything "stock").

Basically, I have a Remington 700 Tactical (24in barrel, .308)collecting dust. I have decided that I would like to own a scout rifle, and am trying to decide how feasible it would be to turn my 700 into one. The requirements for this would be that the total conversion needs to cost less than a stand alone scout rifle (such as the Ruger gunsite scout rifle).

So, how big of an undertaking would this be? My current (and unfinished) to do list:

-Replace barrel to 16 or 18in (the rifle is quite heavy currently, and most likely impractical for me, as a relatively inexperienced shooter, to fire standing. Would this change get its weight down to 7-8 lbs or lower?)
-Extend internal magazine from 4+1 to either 7-8+1 or a detachable magazine modification (possibly expensive and unreliable?)
-Add forward rails for a long eye relief optic
-Possibly change the factory stock to something more tacticool, perhaps a side folder.

The 700 is basically untouched. So on top of this, I would then probably want to go about getting it accurized, but I have been told this is something I should go to a gunsmith for. Anyway, thanks for any help in advance! Feel absolutely free to let me know if this idea is way more trouble than its worth.

I'd either keep or sell the Remington and just buy a Scout Rifle.

The Scout Rifle makes a handy truck rifle, and I do like mine but I think it would be unfeasible to try and convert a Tactical in to a Scout being that companies are making the Scout.

Sell the 700 and that profit plus the money you would spend converting it will get you a nice rifle and accessories for less than it would take just convert the rifle.
I would get a Savage scout. It comes with the accu trigger and stock. That plus a good Savage barrel and the floating bolt head design should provide you the 2moa at 200 yard accuracy required.
You still have money left for a Leupold 1.5-4 Scout scope and a ching sling and maybe even a 9 or 10 round magazine (although they are expensive).

I have to agree with others - you'll get what you really want in the long run by just selling the 700 and going for the Ruger. They seem to be really nice rifles!

Im with the others sell it and buy what you want. Savage, Ruger, what have you. If you did decide to do the conversion, then your looking at atleast another 500 on top to pay for the basics.

Personally i think a heavier gun is easier to shoot off hand (up to a point, ive shot a couple that weighed enough to be really hard to hold up), but a light gun is easier to carry. Less fatigue usually results in better accuracy. at least from steadied field positions. Just my thoughts.

Alright thanks for the advice guys, this might cost a bit more but getting a completed rifle will save me a headache at least :D

See if you can find a Model 7 to start with, at a show, LGS, or pawn shop. They've got a shorter (lighter) action, so it's easier to make weight with them.

Don't try to convert your current rifle. Keep it or sell it as is.

If you want a Scout rifle, forget the Ruger. It has many redeeming qualities, but it's misnamed. IMO it's too heavy and awkward to be a good scout rifle.

Start with a Remington Model 7 or Savage 10 FCM Scout.
