I have a Leupold scout scope I'd like to put on a bolt-gun. Not trying to create a 'real' scout rifle to Col. Cooper or anyone else's specs; I just like the IER scope and would like to get a mid-power (somewhere between 7mm-08 and 30-06ish) gun to put it atop. Not particularly interested in the Ruger frontier, which comes equipped to mount the Scout scope, because of that stubby 16" barrel. I'd like at least a 22" barrel.

Has anyone tried the B-square mount for Remington 700's? It's attractive because of the total lack of gunsmithing involved. Just find a (probly used) 700 with sights and roll.

I know XS Sights makes a mount, too, but it SEEMS to involve machining the barrel, which I'd much rather avoid--I prefer projects I can tackle myself (in part because I don't know a better gunsmith than myself--which is truly not saying much!).

Of these two scout mounting methods, is one preferable, and why? How tricky or involved is the Clifton (aka XS Sights) mount to install? Would the choice of rifle be a factor if the Clifton is preferred, and what would be a good gun to go with?

I wish that I had saved the web archive rather than just the pix so I could name the creator of this rifle but I did not so I can't name him. This is a Rem 700 in 7-08 that was made into a pseudo scout using the B Square mount. It has ghost ring iron sights and can be fitted with either a scout scope or a conventional scope using extended rings. When I put a scout type rifle together, it will be similar to this one.

I only have experience with the XS mount for the Lee Enfield. It is attached to the barreled action by means of glueing it with Acraglass. Katrina claimed the barreled action before I could put it together.

Thanks for the pics, Drue! That b-square looks like a simple enough piece of equipment that it could hardly go wrong. Under 30 bucks at Brownells; and, I understand, it's the one that was used on the Savage scout, so perhaps it would fit them as well (though I'd just as soon have the Remington).

I've read the Bsquare mounts the scope a little high, but I've no personal experience.

I was going to build one at one time with the XS ghost ring sights and the Bsquare mount on a Remington 700 youth. Length and weight were going to be just about right.

I have a 700adl in .308win that I used a Burris scout mount on. I like it better than the B-sq. It uses Redfield rings instead of weaver. ( personal pref. ) It has worked very well for me. The only thing I have heard bad about the b-sq.. Is that the mount tends to be alittle soft.. With Weaver rings I don't see a problem with it
As for the XS mount ( old ashley outdoors ) I have a enfield that I used this set up on. Also very pleased with it. The acra glass holds it stong! But with the 700 action you have to turn the barrel down to size to make it fit! I you have a rifle you would like to try a scout mount on, look for my post called " homemade scout mount " In the gunsmithing section. I show you how to make your own scout mount for about $10! Pictures of the rifle are in " Mosin scout " in the rifle section. And it will work on the 700 without machining
