help removing ar-15 cleaning rod bore guide?

I've got an AR-15 cleaning rod bore guide, the kind made out of delrin with the o-rings and I can't get the thing out of my gun. It has a star shaped piece that interfaces with the bolt lugs, and I rotated so that it's technically free to move, but the darn thing won't budge.

what now?

never mind, I got it out by spraying in some rem oil and using a lot of brute force, there must be an easier way :banghead:

Put a little grease on the "O" ring before inserting. Do remember to clean the chamber well when finished.

Stubbicatt has a valid point about greasing the o-ring. I try to clean my chamber first before using a bore guide that has a o-ring, which will facilitate subsequent removal. That would help avoid the need for greasing the o-ring.

For the last 35 years or so I've cleaned most of my rifles from the muzzle - BUT - I always use either an aluminum rod or a steel rod with a bottleneck case on it as a muzzle protector. I haven't run a steel rod down a bore without that old brass case on the rod since about 1970.

You can use a lot of different fired cases with the flash hole drilled out to fit your rod. The case necks drop down into .30 cal bores and the case centers in the flash hider of whatever barrel. It's kind of a PITA but it's necessary on rifles like the M1 Garand, M1A, M1 carbine, SKS, AK, etc. I take the bolts out of bolt actions and clean from the chamber end, and sometimes do that on the AR's. My main AR is an old Cold SP-1 with the screw hinge pin. I hate wrestling with that thing bent and flopping in the middle so I clean it from the muzzle. The other AR with QD pins I clean from the chamber.

Try the fired case on the rod - not perfect but essentially free and easy.

Thats a pretty neat idea.I certainly have enough different calibers to have cases that I could find one to fit very rifleI have.I'll have to try that.
