Help Selecting a 1911

I have received some excellent tips. One of the items I am considering is buying a Springfield GI and adding a beaver tail, new sights and combat hammer.

Can the sights on the GI be swapped out?

Yes. A little machining work may have to be done. I think.

A local gunsmith is one who recommended i get a GI and let him build on it. His main business is turning 1911s into race guns. I've heard testimonials from a few folks who he has done work for that are very positive. These folks took stock GI's to him and for around $500 got back seriously tuned guns.

One of these patrons who is a serious 1911 aficionado actually received the reworked GI as a gift from a friend. This individual has dozens of high end 1911s from Kimber, Ed Brown, STI, etc etc. He just went on and on about how amazed he was with this re-vamped GI, and how it compared/shot better than some of his $2K 1911s. Said if he had to liquidate, that the GI would be one of the last to go.

Springfield GI and a trip to the Custom Shop for sights and beavertail.

$466 for the GI
$260 for sights & milling
$100 for beavertail
$??? cost of hammer
$80 for re-parkerizing the finish.

you can get a Loaded, which will be the same thing, but with front cocking serrations.

or save a little and get a NIB TRP for ~$1272
