I have a Savage 110 (late model with Accutrigger), in .30-06. It came as a package, with a mediocre Simmons scope mounted.

I have decided to upgrade to a better scope, and took my rifle to Academy to get a Nikon Prostaff.

The problem is... the scope rings are too far apart, causing the Nikon scope's bell to be where the tube should be. I find this bizarre, since the cheapo Simmons fit fine, albeit with little-to-no extra room.

Here's a pic of the rifle as it is right now, with the original scope. I added lines to highlight the distance between the rings, and how they're too far apart to allow for a Nikon.

Does appear to be a problem that I will encounter with other brands of scopes as well, other than Nikon? Are scope tube lengths standardized, or do different brands vary?

If I could get the front scope ring moved backward somehow, that would solve the problem. How might I go about doing that?

Any help is appreciated! I'd really like to get a new scope on this thing!

I solved the same problem on my Savage by using a Millet picitinny mount, allowing me to place the scope rings wherever I desire facilitating the use of a scope with 6" of eye relief.

But for your needs this might work just fine

No to the first and greatly to the second not just different brands but different models from the same manufacturer as well

Take your ruler with you. A possible solution might be a one piece leupold or Burris mount and rings, or a different scope with a longer tube...

I didn't have a problem with my 10 and 110

SOLID!

I break this down after each shoot to transpot it. in ten years I have never had to re-zero the base settings.

There are two easy ways to go. Get an extended front base, rear base, or both. Or you can get extended rings that turn in, I don't remember who from. Wait, the really easy thing to do is to get a one-piece mounting system from Dednutz. Or you can get a rail from EGW or Farrell.

That, or extension rings. They're made for exactly that problem.

These are see-through (yuck!!!) but I'm sure you could get medium-height as well:

This may not work for the Nikon that you want but it works for me with many scopes. The bases can be turned 180 deg. so that the slot is either more forward or further to the rear. I'd have to see a close-up (sans scope) of your rifle with the present mounts to see if that would help in your case.

If I could get the front scope ring moved backward somehow, that would solve the problem. How might I go about doing that?
Try removing the front base and reversing it to see if the slot is father to the rear (or - try to visualize it first).
