Hi folks,

I'm having a problem field stripping a Walther Model 5. Here's what I've been able to do so far:

1) Retracted the slide to cock the hammer (and let it return forward again).

2) Removed the magazine.

3) Successfully removed the knurled barrel nut by rotating it counterclockwise when facing the muzzle and gently releasing tension on the recoil spring.

4) Removed the recoil spring with a twisting motion (the tubular sleeve at the chamber end of the barrel did not come off with the spring and, since there was no way to grab it, it remains in place at the moment).

5) I then retracted the slide as far as it would go and tried to lift the rear of it "up and off" as my instructions said.

But I was unable to draw it rearwards far enough to disengage the the slide from the frame's rails. Some unseen, internal part of the slide is hitting something mounted in the frame. The feeling is very distinct - you smoothly retract the slide most of way with no problem, you feel the normal little compression of the hammer in its cocked position as the slide's stripper rail rides over it, and then CLUNK - you're stopped cold. The slide won't move any farther rearwards, as it obviously must, since the rails have not yet disengaged to permit it to be lifted upwards.

What the heck is causing the interference in there? The only way in which I failed to follow the field stripping instructions I was given was in leaving that tubular sleeve in place (the instructions said to "twist it off" along with the recoil spring - well, that wasn't happening). But could that really be causing my problem, and if so, how? Since the instructions said to remove the sleeve through the front of the slide along with the recoil spring, that means there must be clearance along the entire length of the sleeve between it and the opening in the front of the slide. If that's the case, then where would interference come from?

For what it's worth, I gently tried positioning the safety lever in both the "Safe" and "Fire" positions while retracting the slide and, as I suspected, it didn't make a bit of difference.

Please, someone HELP!

Never mind, I got it. For whatever reason, the sleeve did have to be removed first.
