Help: Walther P99 or Sig P226 (small hands)

I'm buying a handgun for the first time and I have very small hands. I have held both the Walther P99 and the Sig P226 and the Walther felt a little more comfortable. I've heard that you can change the grips on the P226 and I was just wonderin if they make a grip even smaller than the walther's grip on the smallest setting? I would rather buy the Sig but if I can't fix the grip issue on the Sig then I'll be getting the Walther....

have you looked at a sig239? theyre compact and made for small hands imo. also you should hold a glock or a xd and see how they feel fit or a kahr they too are very thin framed

I own both a Sig and a P99c and I don't think you'd be unhappy with either.

I'd go for whichever one fits your hand the best and points the most natural.

I have slightly smaller than average hands, and have had no problems with my Sig double stack P228 or single stack P239. Both are comfortable to hold and shoot. The single stack P239 is slimmer, though, so should fit smaller hands better.

Either is a fine choice.

I don't have a P99 (although I'd like to get one), but I do have a P226. If you have small hands, I can't see the P226 working for you, it's a full size double stack afterall. Like others mentioned, check out the P239, it's a good bit smaller in the grip than the P226 (and I would assume it's smaller than the P99as well since it's a single stack).

I have a p99 and love it, my hands are average and I use the mddle setting, small would work good for small hands I think. Not sure about the sig as I dont have one. Glocks are blocky and bulky in my opinion, didnt like the grip myself.

Trust me - the Walther P99 is the most ergonomic handgun there is - there are 3 backstraps for the grip too -0 incase U want a smaller one than the "medium."

I have small hands too, and I find the Sig 226 to be too fat for me.

Get the Walther.

I have medium sized hands. the P99 is the most comfortable gun I've ever held. the P226 feels good bit it is almost too big for my hand. I think a P99 would be a better fit.

I would opt for the Wlther 99 or the S&W 99 over the Sig 226. Both the Walther & S&W 99's will fit the hand better than the Sig. I own all three of these and the S&W/Walther 99 is my favorite. Surprisingly accurate and relaible with great ergonomics and adjustable heel for diffrent hand sizes.

The Walther is an amazing pistol that you will most likely fall in love with, as most of the die hards here who've tried one can attest to.

I've not tried this myself, because the medium backstrap is perfect for me, but there is a company out there that makes additional backstraps for the P99 out of wood. It looks wierd with the black frame, but they sell 'blanks' as well so that you can shape the wood exactly how you want it.

It would take some serious time with some sand paper, but if the smallest backstrap still is too big for your preference you could get one of the 'backstrap blanks' and whittle your own custom backstrap out of it.

Also look at the SIG P225 (getting harder to find) - it has a longer sight radius than the P239, and it similarly a single stack weapon fit for smaller hands. Also keep in mind that pretty much all SIG pistols can be fitted with short triggers by a competent SIG armorer - and that helps with the reach to the trigger on the larger guns a bit.

The Sig solution is to buy the Sig Short Trigger and have it installed on the gun.

My Sig P239 fits perfectly now.

As much as I hate to agree with Shipwreck, I think the P99 would be much better for you. Using the smallest backstrap, it's good to go with the smallest hands. I have a Sig P229 and had to have a "short trigger" put on it so that I could comfortably make that first DA trigger pull. The reason the Sig P239 is OK for small hands is that it is a single stack gun and gives you fewer rounds than the P99.

You may want to look at H&K's P2000 also. It has interchangeable backstraps, too.

Thanks for all the help guys. I don't think I would be interested in the P239 because we aren't really allowed to own compact guns here in Canada. Our gun laws are rediculous as well as our prices (P99 is going to cost me $1050 before taxes). I think I will be purchasing the P99 as expensive as it is however I was doing some research on the new HK P30 and it is supposed to have interchangeable grip panels as well as backstraps. Anyone know about the grips on the P30? Thanks again for all the help, joining the gun community has been a great experience.

FWIW:

I have small hands, and my P99/AS with the small grip backstrap fits my hands perfectly.



I ONLY shoot from self defense range because I cc for personal defense, and that would be close up and personal. I guarantee you a P99/AS will be capable of more accuracy than your skill will allow you to take advantage of.. I don't care how good a shot you are..

The grip ergonomics are fantastic, accuracy unbelievable, and the rest of the package is filled with little "details" that for me are just icing on the cake. You need to shoot one for yourself.

I do recommend the "AS" (Anti-stress) DA/SA version.

You won't like the sig 226...It is a big grip and not likely to get smaller. Try a sig 225...used from gander mt right at $399. Sweet shooter and you won't have to worry about scratching it as it comes pre scratched!!!
