I just picked up my vz24 and notice something that may be of concern.
The muzzel end of the barrel looks like it was turned, and then had a sleeve put over it to that matches the profile of the barrel. You can see in photo 1 the line, and in photo 2 at the muzzel you can see where the sleeve meets the actual barrel.

Also, the rifling does not come to the end of the barrel. It stops about 1in or 1.5 inchs short. This does not appear to be sleeved, it looks like the barrel was just not fully rifled. So I tried the bullet test and it fell right into the barrel right up to the rifling then stopped. So the rifling is tight, but the smooth portion is overbored.

Is this an arsenal repair, normal, a butcher job or worse? Should I be concerned?

It's not uncommon for muzzles to be counterbored to repair a barrel worn by excessive cleaning with steel cleaning rods or to repair an otherwise damaged muzzle. The sleeve appears to be the front sight mount. There is nothing unsafe that I can see and the proof is shooting it for accuracy, but perhaps you should have the headspace on the bolt checked for safety. The Russians did the counterboring routinely on their Mosin rifles. It might be that it was a Russian capture and they repaired it.

Did any other mauser need a sleeve for the mount the front sight? That's what it looks like, but I just didn't get it so I thought I'd ask.

That does not look like an original mil-spec VZ24 front sight. But I could be wrong. And yes the Russians commonly counter bored barrels to repair barrels worn by years of cleaning from the muzzle end.

thats the standard zv-24 front sight. their barrels had a step turned on the very end for the front sight base. czech front sight bases are the same diameter as the barrel. most german military 98's front sight bases slipped over the barrel & was a larger diameter than the barrel.
