Alright, I'm looking to get a Dillon XL650 for my .40 reloading. I've been loading on my Lee classic turret for a while now and feel it's time to move up. Most everything will come from Grafs since I have a C&R and they are FAR cheaper than anyone else with one. Other than the actual press, what will be needed? What would be nearly essential? what would be cool to have?

This is the initial kit I would be starting off with btw.

Primer flip tray and a lot of small primer tubes. I would also get the powder check die. Are you using Lee dies currently? If so, I would purchase Dillon dies.

I have both presses. Good to keep the Lee for load development, small batches of whatever.

My 650 works fine with Lee dies and I use a RCBS lock out die in #3.

What would be cool to have: The RF 100 auto primer filler(doesn't use the regular primer tubes), loads you up in 30 seconds. It is $300 though, and I'm not likely to ever be able to justify buying one. If you are going to keep that 650 churning you might, though.

I greatly prefer Dillon dies, at least the 9mm and .45 ACP ones I have used for a long time in my 550B. The huge radius is nice, tapered sizer for the 9mm, super easy and fast swap of seater plugs, but the best is how fast and easy they are to clean without removal. I use 99.9% cast bullets, mostly ones I make myself, and being able to clean out the gunk fast, w/o moving the die is fantastic. Literally two seconds to drop the seater stem or taper crimp insert to clean them.

I have used plenty of older (short) Lee carbide dies in my 550, but in my experience with the two calibers I mention, and using Lee for other cast bullet calibers I load, the Dillon dies make it so nice, and more enjoyable.
