oh and ps it shoots great

THe only grips that will fit are those that are designed to fit a square butt K frame S&W. Round butt grips will not fit.Your other question, it's a light weight alloy

any info about my new gun would be great

I'm no expert, but IIRC, your gun is a K frame. You'll need to know that when ordering grips.

Way back when, the only Smith magnums were N frame. That's a pretty beefy gun.

But some Leos (Bill Jordan mostly?) complained the N frame was too heavy. And heavier than needed for the 357. So Smith responded with your gun. A K frame 357 known as the "Combat Magnum."

It's a great gun. I own a 19, and two of the stainless counterparts, the 66.

The only problem, and this is disputed, is that continuous use of high velocity lightweight bullets will produce severe cuts in the topstrap just above the forcing cone.

I've heard numerous explanations about this and how that the cutting only goes so far and then stops.

I've personally never seen it in any of my guns.

One of the best things about your new revolver is that you can practice with cheaper 38 special ammo and then load 357s for defense.

If I were going to be limited to owning only one handgun, it just might be the 19.

scandium

The so called "scandium" revolvers are made from an aluminum alloy containing something on the order of 1 to 3% scandium. So it's really an aluminum alloy. Calling it "scandium" is a product of the ad copywriter's imagination, something not known for strict adherance to reality.

That said, 1 to 3% of scandium in the aluminum alloy does significantly improve its strength.

Scandium sells as a commodity for around $7000 a pound so you know there's not much in there. The high price is not due to rarity, but because it is so thinly and evenly spread over the earth. You have to move a lot of dirt to get a little scandium. The only deposits worth mining are in Ukraine and it was unavailable in the West unti lafter the fall of the Soviet Union. Prior to that the Soviets used it in alloys in their aerospace industry.

wow thanks for the quick replys and great info

ive been looking at grips

how are the hogue rubber monogrip? or the crimson trace LG-307 rubber overmold?

how can you tell if you have a scandium gun?

thanks

what kind of work did you need to do? just wondering since you said you do not know much about it but that it needed a lot of work.

PinnedandRecessed did not mention it, but the Bill Jordan stuff happened in the 1950's. Your gun being a 19-2 means it was made in the 1960's. Quality should be very good.

As for grips, just say K frame square, and people should know what you mean. Grips are very individual so you really need to try them out. Any well stocked gunshop should have a variety of combinations to try out. The lasergrips work well, as far as fit, you just have to try them out. If you need round butt grips for your hands, the grip can be reduced pretty easily with a jig that Brownells sells.

You can tell your gun is scandium if it is of recent manufacturer, is really light, and has a large atom like symbol on the side. Most of the lightweight guns now have a 3XX model number, though Smith and Wesson is not 100% consistent in their naming nomenclature.

hi ktd

I've had revolvers before and repaired a few for friends
i have no training on gunsmithing i mostly just take it apart a bunch of times and see how every thing works

on the S&W i got lucky, it just needed to be really cleaned, there was leaves and sand in the action... ??? some of the internal parts were really warn from the dirt in the action, it was missing a spring in the cylinder for the extractor so when you push it, it stayed out. the little button on the side that releases the cylinder was badly worn and was very hard to open the cylinder, the spring was rusted, and a bunch of other little things.

but the barrel is good, and also the cylinder
it looks like it was fired very little just not very well taken care of

i just didnt know if i could put a round butt on a square butt :uhoh:

thanks for the info
