I acquired a model 19-3. It came with overmolded aftermarket grips. I want to put some different grips on but neither of the grips I have tried want to fit correctly. I tried some S&W K frame round but grips but they don't fit. I bought some ahrends grips to put on there they don't fit either, it's like there is just a slight difference in the frame.

the model 19 came with wood combat grips. nice big wooden grips. you can find them if you look. most people took them off because of their size to put on the smaller rubber grips. i kept my grips on and learn how to shoot the gun with them.

What is the barrel length? If it's 4" or longer it's likely a Square butt and not a round butt.

The factory "goncalo alves" grips my 19-3 look good and feel good in my hands. They are big but I think they are classy.

2" barrel pinned and recessed. Target hammer and trigger. Its a round but. I thought ahrends K\L frame grips would fit it for sure. It just does not line up with either grips I have tried.

If you aren't super interested in historic accuracy, I went to eBay and got some of the combat grips from Thailand really cheap. And they look great. Fit my big hands well.

"How off is it? Sometimes wood grips need to be fitted a little bit."
This could be it. I have another round but K frame I am going to pull the grips and compare.

The S&W model 12 Airweights in their original generations had aluminum frames that were around 1/8" thicker than regular steel K frames so their grips are of a different thickness than conventional K frame grips.

Perhaps your stocks are from an early M12.

I have a couple 19-4's with the squared butts but one 19-3 that does have a round butt. It had ugly after market grips as well when I bought it. I found some wood S&W grips that fit at Midway. I had to wait a couple of months on back order but they fit nicely.

19-3= square butt frame. Although I believe there were some round butt frames made for 2 1/2" 19's, I am no expert so I may be wrong. Any set of stocks made for a SB K frame should fit with no problem.

Nailed it.

I did encounter a square butt that had been ground to round butt that needed round butt grips modded or they would not fit.

I've owned this lightly used 19-5 for several years and it came with a crappy set of rubber grips from the previous owner.

I had the original square wooden grips from a 686 I purchased in the late 1980s. Years ago I rounded the bottom to fit my hand better and they now ride on the 19.

Is it 2" or 2.5"? You should measure from the end of the barrel to the front of the cylinder. This is because the forcing cone is part of the barrel and extends through the frame.

All 2.5" model 19s (started in the 19-3 series) were round butts. I've seen a few non 2.5" model 19s that were re-barreled and had a square butt or even a square butt ground to round.

Pictures would help determine what your problem is. Picture worth a 1000 words and all.

Its a 2.5 inch barrel. I had to sand the grips until they would clear around the trigger guard and now they fit ok. Thanks for all the replies and help!

On the older S&W's the wood grips were installed with the gun "in the white" and polished down with the gun. That is why the grips were numbered to the gun. Grips for other guns or new uninstalled grips will be close to fitting but will likely be a hair off.
