I have a friend/co-worker who has been saving up for the past year or so to buy his first gun(s)... Ever since November he has really wanted to buy an EBR or AK because of the possibility of not being able to acquire one in a few years. However, he has also wanted a handgun for home defense, target shooting, etc... and he is also getting his LTCH so that he can carry it.

We went to the range this morning, and then afterward he said he was ready to drop down the benjamens and wanted me to take him to the gun store.

We went, and here is what he came home with:

Springfield Mil-Spec Full-Size 1911

and a Century International Arms AR-15

Now, all I have in the "EBR" department are ak's (they have all been 100% reliable and have served me very well, and I know absolutely nothing about AR-15's. But he wanted to get something different than me and the rest of our co-workers, so he picked out the AR instead.

Any comments about my friends first gun purchase? Should he have gone with something different as far as the rifle is concerned?

Thanks!

Our opinions don't matter. Does your friend like his guns? Yes? Good! By the way, thanks for helping bring a new shooter into the fold. Well done.

Oh yes, he is ecstatic. As am I; I think he did well, and I just can't believe he found a Springer Mil-Spec. Those things are so hard to come buy around here.

Nice looking weapons. I thought AR's were hard to come by. My gunsmith told me the Mexicans get them (paying very high prices) and have factory's that make select fire trigger groups. Today I read that it's a myth, that select fire guns are really common in Mexico, and were made that way, in other words, they don't need no stinking AR 15's! :)

I've got the same basic guns myself; your friend has good tastes :D .

My Mil-Spec has been very reliable, except it doesn't like CCI Blazers much. Love Golden Saber JHPs though. I don't know about his Mil-Spec, but mine did need an action job. Had a reputable gunsmith do it for $50 and it made a world of difference. It was very gritty/rough and had a sloppy let off. Not any more, it breaks cleanly at about 4.5 lbs. Also, the stock SA mags (made by metalform) are quite good, but will probably need to have the mag springs swapped out with Wolf 11 lbers down the road.

Also, I did order some WWII era bakelite grip panels for mine to give it more of a classic look.

As for ARs, well, I really like them myself. I really enjoy mine: a Del-Ton mid length upper on a doublestar lower with a RRA 2-stage trigger group. I did have a few feed failures early on, but this was due to cheaping out on ultra crappy steel mags that cost $7 each. I've been running Magpul PMAGs ever since and they are fantastic - I highly recommend them to your friend. I've also heard that the C-Products mags with the Magpul followers are excellent as well, but I have no experience with them. Got tons of respect for AKs, but I find the ergonomics of ARs more to my liking. To each his own.

Tell him now he'll have to start saving for a 22 of some type so he can shoot more often ... its never ending ;) !

I thought AR's were hard to come by.

They are still pretty plentiful in my neck of the woods, and AR prices haven't shot up nearly as much (percentage wise) as AKs and SKSs.

at least he made the right choices a 1911, there really is no better pistol on the market, and an AR-15, if ever he's not happy with the AR he can always build and ad to it as he feels its needed, the 1911 will serve him well forever.

Tell your friend welcome to the dark side and well all are glade to see new shooters added to our ranks no matter what he bought.

brockgl, are you sure it is a Charter Arms AR-15? I dont think Charter Arms ever made AR's.
