My parents were recently divorced and I don't like the idea of my mom being at home all alone. She is only 5'2" and 120lbs.

We went shooting and figured out that a semi-auto would be too much. So we picked her up a Smith and Wesson 642 in 38 Special. It's the hammerless model with the Airlight frame. Hopefully she will get her CWP. I am enrolling her in a women's shooting/self-defense class. BIG BLUE

GOOD!!!

But make sure that she gets some training and plenty of range time with it.

One person at a time.........:D

You did right and your mother deserves credit for raising her son to be a caring man.

Now, can mom join the TRT? ;)

Good work, but what about your Father? Does he own guns? Are you trying to ensure that he's protected?

Yep, he's got three of them. I'm just concerned for her because she drives a nice car and takes care of my sister who is 2 1/2. She can be an easy mark and I am trying to help her understand about keeping an eye out all the time, blah blah blah. Tyler

If you don't mind me asking, why is a semi-auto too much? I'd think that the recoil would be a bit easier to handle, even. Are the mags too hard to load?

Good job converting your mom. I'm trying to help my mother see the light, too.

The recoil wasn't that bad. But trying to teach her about racking the slide, inserting magazine, chambering a round, yada yada yada, she was just a little overwhelmed. She shot ok with my XD9 but she had a hard time pulling the slide all the way back. She is pretty petite, so her hards gave her problems reaching the slide stop and what not. Tyler

similar problem

My mother and wife both liked shooting my semi-auto's more, but both were turned off by having to fool with magazines and racking the slide. My mom is 5'2 and 100lbs. My wife is bigger, but both had issues with the slide on my HP's and 1911's. As a result, my parents house gun is a GP100 and we use a Model 28.

Both my parents and my wife shoot my semi-auto's better then the revolvers, but all shoot the revolvers well enough to do the job. The KISS method won out.

A gun someone won't use and isn't comfortable with doesn't do them a lot of good.

Good job on taking care of mom.

Jeff
