Circutious thread:

Went to Wally World to buy a Ruger 10/22 in stainless $208. Figured I would beat the price increases that must come because of the steel shortage (China buying up all available).

Wal-Mart was still stinging from big brother fines (translated into government trying to push Wal-Mart out of gun sales, or just plain some insane jerk in government compensating for his/her inadequacy so he/she puts the screws to Wal-Marts paperwork <maybe they use blue ink instead of black> so Wal-Mart responds by sending sporting goods employees to school and tells them of all the mistakes that resulted in fines. So I arrive at one of their stores 10 miles down the road, and have a MO drivers license with my PO box number on it; lived here 20 years and bought a dozen guns with this drivers license, but now I must have a drivers license with my street address on it and they don't sell me the rifle.

So I go to the local license office the next day to add my physical address to my license; closed for holliday I never heard of (Truman Day). So I leave town for a few days to visit my grandchildren; return and go to license office on Thursday and lady who runs it, who I have known at least 15 years is gone to the doctor and has the office closed. Finally a few days later, I go back and she gives me a change of address card with my PO Box and physical address on it and she even puts her state of MO stamp on it.

Home free, so I am at another Wal-Mart 20 miles in the other direction after dinner out, and they have a Henry Golden Boy 22. Try to buy it, but the phone lines to Big Brother are not operational so I wait a few days and go back and buy.

So here is my question: As I am leaving Wally Mart the guy walking me to the door reminds me that they also have a Henry in .44. I saw it in their little carousel and didn't pay attention so when I got home I started to think of it.

Can a .44 rifle be as effective as a 30.30 lever gun. Assume hunting deer size game? assume protecting the spread in a societal breakdown when we can't fillup because there is not enough oil and goverment is taking what little is left.

So would you rather a 30.30 or this cool looking Henry .44 with the beautiful brass receiver only able to shoot pistol ammo, or would you like to have a 30.30. Or better yet, would you opt for a combat type rifle? Too many choices, but one certainty, oil is done and we are in fact moving toward "little house on the prairie" at best and at worst the "stone age".

I had one in my hands the other day at the gun store. The wood to metal fit was superb & the stocks-Holy cow! What a gorgeous rifle. If I had the dough I'd of bought it just to fondle occasionally.Beautiful gun.
.30-30 vs .44mag?It seems like a shame to shoot something so purty.
Sorry,jw.

The 44 Magnum will work as well as 30-30 at distances out to about 100-125 yards. The 30-30 is good out to around 200+ yards.

I suppose it depends on where you hunt deer. I've heard that most deer are taken at distances well inside 100 yards, but if you're hunting near farm fields, the 30-30 would certainly be better.

If the woods is where you will do your deer hunting, I would say go with the 44 Magnum. It will be nice to not have to buy so many different kinds of ammo. (assuming you have a 44 Magnum wheelgun)

The 30-30 is probably a bit more all-around versatile though, as it is a true rifle cartridge.

My personal taste would not be for a gun with a brass colored receiver, but it is just that. I really like the classic walnut on the Marlin 1894 or 336.

If you do decide to go with the Henry, you can shoot deer with it AND admire it. There is no need to make her into a safe queen.

FWIW, I read a review on that rifle and it did very well.

As many gunwriters have stated over the years, a 44 mag or heavy loaded 45 long Colt fired from a rifle is more powerful than a 30-30 at 100 yards....actually they are more powerful than the great 30-30, at a lot further than 100 yards.....

So the next time someone states the 44 mag and 45 long Colt from rifles only has an advantage over the 30-30 under 100 yards...show him the error of his reality.

It all depends on what you are planning to do with it. The .44 mag is an excellent brush gun, and would be great for anything less than 100 yards. The .30-30 is better for longer range. Im not sure which ammo costs more.
