Has anyone mounted a red dot on a henry lever action rifle yet? If so, what brand, and how has it worked for you.

I have never used a red dot, but want to try one on the henry. My wife is small and my remington 550 is a little big and heavy for her, but I had her try the henry this weekend and she liked that much better. Hers and my eyes are pretty good, but if I can make shooting easier for her, she will more likely stick with it.

thanks in advance :D

Kind of like a laser on a musket isn't it?

Are you talking about a rimfire Henry or a centerfire? Per their website, looks like you need a special barrel mount that has a cantilevered Weaver rail that any scope can mount to.

http://henryrepeating.com/h001v_varmint.cfm

Thier parts and accessories sections are down at the moment.

"You can mount a scope on the Henry Big Boy by purchasing a Henry Cantilever Scope Mount. Item BB-CSM - $27.50. (Gunsmithing required for installation)"

Rimfire, good fun cheap plinking and no hard recoil to scare her away.

Hey, it is not as much overkill as Dock Browns telescoping scope on his Lever action on back to the future III :neener:

I will check there site out when it comes up. Thanks :)

If your talking about the Henry .22lr, you may want to consider a 4X32 scope. I have a 4X32 with see-thru mounts on my Henry and am very satisfied with it.

The Henry H001 has a grooved receiver so you can mount a red dot on it. You can find a red dot that fits the .22 groove or you can buy a mount that converts the .22 groove to a weaver rail. I think BKL sells one.

Now, if you do this I promise to laugh at you! Just Kidding!

Please, if you must put optics on that wonderfully handy lever action, please, please put a nice small rimfire scope on there. If money is short then check out the Simmons .22mag line of scopes. If you have a little more to spend check out the Weaver RV7 2-7x28mm rimfire scope.

I had a red dot on my H001 for a short while. Here's the problem: the smallest dot you'll find for a decent price is at least 4 MOA in size, possibly larger. The Henry is much more accurate than that. I found that at 50 yards, the damned dot covered up the ENTIRE target I was using. Scrapped it. Also tried 3-9x and 4x scopes - 3-9x was much too large for that small rifle, the 4x had terribly clarity. Shelved 'em.

I ended up with a Williams peep sight. Not only is it a VAST improvement on the stock sights (which I cannot drift with ANY punch for the life of me... they seem to be welded in place), but it's more "historically correct," if that matters anything on a modern .22 lever-action.

Thanks for the advice so far. I guess we will shoot it in stock form and see how my wife likes it. If she has a hard time with it, we will try a traditional scope, and if that still does not work, I will try those peep sites.

I knew there was a reason I had to ask first, helps when other with more knowledge have tried it first, that way I will be doing less of this :banghead:

Just wanted to post this for you guys that are young enough to still use iron sights

After trying the Williams Fool Proof on my H001 and finding that the factory sight was too short and that there was no easy solution to replacing it I starting looking for other options. I wanted something that did not require any drilling, tapping or machining. I ended up going with a Williams WDOS dovetail base to replace the factory rear buckhorn sight. The base comes without a sight blade so that you can choose the blade to suite you best.

Williams has blades in various notch configurations. I went with the 3/16” “U” notch to mate with the white dot front sight. The factory white dot front sight is the metal replacement from Henry ($10.00) and, to me, is better than the supplied plastic sight.

This link shows the 3/16 “U” notch that goes with the WDOS base, but when I ordered this from midway I actually got a 3/16” “U” notch blade and base to fit a Williams WGOS which is a little different but I just removed the base and used the blade.

If you are using the factory plastic sight you may want to order the square notch blade.

In either case I recommend the 3/16” height unless you have your factory sights elevated very high to get zeroed. I am using the 3/16” blade and have the base nearly bottomed out. It is nice to me because it that way the sight is as low to the gun as possible and less likely to snag on things.

Ghost Ring option that will work with the base above. Not sure how this will work with the factory front sight.

If you want a rear fiber optic sight, then any number of the Williams rear blades like the one in the picture in this link will also work with the WDOS base.

Of course a red dot on a lever is untraditional but just go for it .You can find medium priced red dots that have more than one retical. Some models give you a choice of a dot ,cross, donut or circle, another model gives you a choice of different size dots. $50-$100. Check out Midway to start.(Midwayusa.com)
One concern is most lever guns have straight low stocks so try to mount the sight as low as possible.
Older gentleman in my gunclub has mounted a cheepo ($35) red dot on his 30/40 kraig carbine because his eyes aren't as good as they once were.Untraditional and frankly kinda funky looking but his freezer is full of venison!
Tell us how it works and show us your gun and mount when you get it all bolted together!
