I have been doing this routine for a couple of years now; I have been shooting since 2001. Ammo prices have altered my range time quite a bit. A couple of years ago I used twice as much ammo during my practice sessions. I dry fire and practice reloads with all my guns once or twice a week too.

Week 1
I use my carry gun (1911) and shoot 21 rds drawing from concealment and firing controlled pairs at 15 yds. Then I use the .22 conversion and fire around 100 rds drawing from concealment: targets distance ranges from 3 to 25 yds; weak hand, strong hand, from cover, kneeling, on the move, from retention, etc. Finally I use my PM9 (secondary carry gun) and fire 10 sets of controlled pairs.

Week 2
I shoot around 50 rds through my IPSC production gun (XD9 tactical). I also shoot controlled pairs and more or less the same routine as my carry gun. I shoot IPSC 8 to 10 times a year.

Week 3
AR time! I tend to shoot 40/60 rounds through my custom AR. I ALWAYS shoot 5 rds using the BUIS offhand at a steel plate (8.5/11 inches) at 100 yds down range. The rest of the rounds are shot from different positions (kneeling, behind cover, etc.) Again, I shoot controlled pairs at the same steel plate alternating the use of the BUIS and the Aimpoint.

Week 4
I split week 4 between the shotgun (Mossberg 590) and the .22 rifle (Marlin 60). I do not shoot too many shells through the 590; since it is only used in 3 gun competitions I tend to practice a lot of reloads. I usually shoot 12shells at a steel targets. The Marlin sees little action too, around 50 rds per session. The rifle is topped with a Bushnell Trophy 4x12 scope that I bought from a friend for $100, the glass was NIB :D. In the distant future the scope will be mounted on a .308 bolt rifle.

What do you guys think?

Do you utilize a shot timer in your practice sessions ?

Always. When shooting my carry gun I set the par time to 3 seconds, best first shot hitting the A zone was 1.72 and best second shot was 2.17. I get better times with the XD for obvious reasons; best first shot hitting the A zone was 1.46, best second shot 1.84. I have shot faster, but either I get Cs, Ds, or miss the target :uhoh:. I am not one of the big shots down here , but someday I will :D.

Usually I do not use the timer while using the the long guns. The only exception is when I focus on reloading the shotgun. Here is the drill: start with one shell in the shotgun, shot (steel plate is 10yds away) and reload 3 shells and fire once. The goal is to do it under 4 seconds, my best time so far has been 4.13

Here is how the AR looked like a year ago.

I'm glad to hear you're using a shot timer. Most don't, but think they are "fast as lightning...."

I'd be curious how your handgun rounds break down as to distance and shots fired. Start positions, etc.

Thanks !

I like to shoot from 15 yds and I would say that 70% are A hits. When shooting my CCW, specially with the .22 kit, I start from different positions: facing targets, back to targets, right/left side to targets, walking back and forth and from angles.

If I'm using the XD, the shotgun, and the AR I like to start from the positions mentioned above, but the guns are either on condition 1, 2, or 3. I also practice most of the starting position that are commonly used in IPSC.

I'm a fan of using a .22 conversion for your carry. I too spend a lot of time with my .22 pistol. I've found that it really seems to help. Probably something about fundimentals.... I suggest this to a lot of guys I know but it seems they'd rather reinforce bad habbits with expensive centerfire ammo. I also like the idea of using a shot timer.

Nice rifle. I prefer wood on my shotgun though (but I do feel a little guilty knocking it about durring 3 gun matches).
