Actually the coffee table is mine but, I would freak if I busted it doing somthing like taking a pic of one of my guns on it. My wife is like "oh well" when it come to me and my guns. As for the rifle, it just got back from Springfield Armory for real bad extraction problems. I mean it would fail to extract about every three rounds. Getting though the first 140 round South African battle pack was a nightmare. I took it to the range Sunday after getting it back and this time, it ate through another battle pack without a single problem. I can keep it with in six inches with open sights at 100 yards. I know the rifle will do better but, I was more into range blasting Sunday than slow fire grouping now that the rifle would make it more than three rounds without having a stoppage.
I had the same problems with my SOCOM and South African surplus. The fired case would stick in the chamber, but the extractor would let go allowing the action to try and chamber another round. I had to let the case cool off to get it out. Very annoying. No problems with Aussie surplus (which I had very little of), but the steel cased chinese stuff was pretty bad. Headspacing checked out well within spec (so said my gunsmith...I'm not that savvy). I finally got tired of it and started using comercial .308 stuff or Lake City when I can find it. No more problems, but it costs alot to feed.
What did SA say they did to fix your issues? I'd be very interested to hear of some way I can go back to shooting South Af surplus!
I am a member of another website forum specific to M14's and M1A's. There are a few of us having problems with our new Springfields. Some on the site have suggested replacing the extractor with a USGI piece but, I refused to pay out of my pocket to fix a 1400.00 rifle that has a warranty. They replaced the bolt with a new extractor plunger/spring and reheadspaced the bolt. There is a guy there with a SOCOM with the same problem. He sent it in the same time as I did and got it back at exactly the same time with the same fix. He has also had zero problem.
