Hey everyone, been looking around and whatnot on here for the few days since i purchased my Rem 870 Express Magnum, but I ran into a problem today and I hope someone can help me out.

Today was about the 4th time Ive taken it out to shoot and it has performed flawlessly up until now. I usually just load up the magazine, and chamber the shells from there. This time, though, I opened the chamber, popped a shell in, and then filled the magazine. Aimed, fired. Tried to pump it but it wouldnt budge. I put the safety on to check things out and couldnt figure out what was going on... and well.. still cant. I have no idea what it is, but the cocking mechanism will not move backward to eject the shell. Of course its still under warranty and if I cant get any help, Im heading to the gun shop in the morning :)

On the left side of the gun (near the trigger) there is a little action release button. Push this button in and open the action.

It happens every time you load the gun the way you did. (by putting one in the chamber first)

Just so I have this straight, you dropped a round in the chamber then closed the action. From there you loaded the magazine. Correct?

If thats correct then you have done nothing wrong in the loading sequence. I load both mine that way and have never have a problem.

How many rounds have you put through it? It sounds like a simple case of a fouled chamber or one that the factory sluge wasn't cleaned out of.

One, if the round has been fired and the magazine is empty, try to rack that shell out once more. Don't be afraid to lean into it.
Two, If this frees it up, give the chamber and the rest of the gun a thourogh cleaning and lube.

Welcome to The High Road to the both of you.

Sounds like you have a shell stuck in the chamber.
A number of people have this problem with new Express guns.
The most common causes are a dirty chamber or burrs around the chamber.
Often just cleaning the gun "fixes" it.

Cheap ammo is the MOST common cause of extraction problems.

Unload the magazine by pressing the shell releases inside the receiver.
These can be reached by pushing the shell lifter up.
They are two long flat springs on either side of the lower receiver.
Pressing the releases toward the receiver wall will allow the shells in the magazine to be pushed out.

Once you have the magazine empty,
apply the safety, press the slide release on the left font of the trigger guard, then bump the butt on a hard surface as you pull the pump handle back.

This should open the action.

Once the action is open the shell should be extracted. If not use an aluminum cleaning rod to tap the shell out of the chamber,

Once you have the gun completely empty, field strip it per the owner's manual, and give the gun a good cleaning.
Use a bore or shotgun chamber brush and solvent to scrub the chamber out.

After cleaning and drying the gun, apply your favorite lube.

Before reassembling the gun inspect the rear edge of the locking lug recess in the barrel extension for burrs.
Inspect the top rear edge of the bolt's locking lug for burrs.
Inspect the area around the chamber mouth for burrs of sharp edges that might cause the shells to stick.

Last, buy a better grade of ammo and try that.

If after all this it still causes problems, either take it back where you bought it, or contact Remington.

Yeppers, sounds like a new 870, lol, got mine a month ago and It does that all the time, its just the release button is kinda burred, it goes away the more you put trough it, its not that its dirty, I cleaned mine so many times its rediculous. Its not that you filled the mag after the chamber, I only load the chamber, one possible problem is that you pull the action forward after the shot, the recoil unlocks it so you dont have to use the button, if it unlocks and you pull it forward the button might no go back to a point that you can release it. Mine does this all the time at the range.

i have a mossy 500 and if i load the first round into the chamber, it doesnt extract the empty, but still tries to lod the next shell. after the fisrt shot is fired, it doesnt happen. since the gun is a .410, i figure that mossbergs loose fitting parts and the small shells are the reason for this. i just hope it doesnt jam when a rabbit appears.:) :)

S&S,

Try dropping the first round into the port and driving it home a little harder instead of putting the round in the chamber by hand. It might be an issue with the extractor not seating over the rim fully.

HMM

one possible problem is that you pull the action forward after the shot

Dumb question, how is this a problem, aren't you suppose to pull the action back (to rack a shell) then forward (to lock) after a shot?
