Hi Point .40 caliber carbine

Haven't ever shot a .40, but own a 9mm Hi-Point that I bought from a fellow THR member a while back.

What can you say? A $100 gun with a $30 red dot that goes bang every time and is extremely accurate = fun in my book.

At the PA THR shoot this weekend, Spot77 and I were easily picking off clays from the 50 year berm from the standing position. It gets almost boring at 50 yards, it's so accurate. At 100 yards you have to think a little harder, but it's not at all hard to stay on target from that distance.

I don't think that I'd personally buy one new, but I've been very, very pleased with this inexpensive little firearm. I've probably gotten more enjoyment out of this gun on a dollar per dollar basis than any gun I own.

If you want it for a fun gun, I'd suggest getting it in 9mm so that you can shoot more.......

Does it eat Wolf, or do you have to step up to WWB?

Just wondering, from an economic standpoint.

I've only ever used brass cased ammo but it's never flinched with anything I've fed it. I can't remember if I've ever done any +P through it but the manufacturer says that it's safe.

I have people come and buy ammo for their hi-points all the time. The only thing they seem to hate is that aluminum Blazer stuff for some reason. Other than that, they are a good gun for the money. Only down side is that there will never be hi-cap magazines for them. :(

this site has a 15 round mag for the 9mm carbine

Very cool! That's always been one of my biggest gripes against the little carbine. I may order one of those 15 rounders and see how they work. I'll report back here after I give it a shake down.

This would really elevate my opinon of the Hi-Point as a home defense gun.

I've always thought that a reliable pistol caliber carbine is an outstanding choice for a person (I have my wife in mind) who is familiar with firearms but doesn't necessarily train defensively. Very accurate, not overpowered with regards to recoil and relatively simple controls.

While my wife is an outstanding pistol marksman for only having shot for a short time (she is an assistant university coach), she has not gone so far as to take a defensive handgun course (more a function of time than interest).

When you start throwing magazine changes in, you further complicate things in a pressure situation. The Kel-Tec with a 33 round Glock magazine would be ideal to some folks, I suppose......but I already have the Hi-Point and it was only $100
:D

Well the reason that hi-point doesn't make hi-caps for the carbines is because they use single stack mags and they can't seem to make a good hi-cap single stack mag. That's the story I heard.

And the mag inserts into the pistol grip of the rifle. If they only tooled it bigenough to fit the mags they were producing during the AWB, the only way to make it any bigger is to stick it out of the grip/
