I am planning on picking up a Hi Point Carbine, all thanks to the info in a previous thread I will also be picking up a nagant but thats another story :), anyways I was wondering what caliber would be better? I have shot 9mm and own a Walther P38, but I have never shot .40SW. For the purpose of just shooting for fun would it be better to get the 9mm Carbine because I have another firearm that fires the same? I think 9mm is cheaper but I am not sure, also with reloading, is it more difficult or easier to reload one of the two calibers?

Thanks in advance!

i too have the bug for the high point but i already have a 9mm and a .40!

if i were you id stick with the 9mm. Ammo is way cheaper and with the difference youll shoot up in a couple weekends you can buy the ati stock with your savings!

Well for the price of an SKS you can probably get both. There is no difference for ease of reloading but you will find more 9mm brass laying around than .40. The 9mm bullets (and factory ammo as well) are a bit cheaper so for just plinking the 9mm is a bit better.

For HD the .40 is generally considered superior but people with strong emotional attachment will argue either way. I think the 995 is about $15 less also.

9mm is about half the cost of .40s&w right now. And for reloading, 9mm has much more tolerance for error as appose to the 40s&w. I'm not saying its impossible to overload a 9mm, but its a little more forgiving in my experience.

Also, .40 has a little more punch, but with the new +p and +p+ ammunition offerings in 9mm, you'll see just as much penetration and expansion in the 9mm loads as you will in any .40s&w load.

You can practice more often for less money with the 9mm. I'd rather have the guy on my side who's had lots pf practice with a 9mm, than someone who hasn't practiced at all with the 40.

Granted muzzle velocity and ft lbs of energy are not absolutley definitve predictors of which caliber is best. BUT...Doubletaps 155gr gold dots come whizzing out of my KT sub2k @ ~1500fps/775lbs. My buddy has a hipoint 995 I chronoed magtech 115 +P JHP's @~1400fps/500lbs. Granted comparing magtech ammo to DT ammo is not a fair comparison but, the .40 generates some nice numbers.

As far as cost goes, I buy from mastercast. Their 9mm 115 cast RN ammo is $6.40/50 rounds vs $7/50 for .40 180gr cast FP's.

Since I already have a .40 sub2k, I find myself looking at the hipoint 995 and thinking...I need to get me one of them;)

Ah, High Point carbines! I have a .40, and I bought a 9mm for my grandson. They're both a HOOT to go plinking with, especially with cheap BSA red-dot sights on them. I'd say everybody's right about the 9mm being the more cost-effective to play with. My .40 is a little thumper, I'd bet the rounds pick up some decent extra velocity from the longer barrel. I keep that one loaded and under my bed, need to get a light and laser for it.

Cody's 9mm took a little sighting-in, but my .40 was dead-on right out of the box. This is my first trip to the range, 50 rounds. Can't recall the distance, 10-15 yards I think. Stock sights, no adjusting. I did put a tiny piece of masking tape on the front sight so I could see it better. Neither has given us any trouble.

But they're not exactly what you'd call "pretty" guns.

pretty, they are not. however, they shoot great, are reliable, and (relatively) cheap fun. looks can be improved somewhat with aftermarket stock. I had one for a while, but eventually the novelty wore off and it got left in the safe more and more often, until I decided I wanted something else and sold it.

I have two of the 9mm Hi-point Carbines, I would go with 9mm although I like 40 for my pistols. 9mm is faster and cheaper, seems like a good fit for a carbine. Also you can use +p loads, I have some of the Isreal production black tip 9mm saved up for mine. The magiznes also fit in the 9mm hi-point pistols. On the flip size 40 is easier to find at Walmart, although I have manged to buy up around 2000 rounds of of the $8.99 Blazer 9mm from them, generally 40 is in stock more often.

i love my 9mm carbine, ive put over 10K rounds through it and the last 6K i have not cleaned it. ive been trying to get it to break but it just won't. also its great with the peep sights to hit clay piegons at 50-100 yards.

Skip the HiPoint altogether and get the KelTec if you just want an inexpensive carbine plinker. Why?

More mag capacity, plus it folds up and is somewhat better quality. Oh and get the 9mm because it's just cheaper and recoils less. You'd be surprised, it's a tad snappy.

I have a HiPoint 9mm, wish it was the KelTec.

Whatever happened to the .45 ACP Highpoint ???

No telling. They've been promising the 45 for years now but never bring it to market. They even redesigned the stock but...where is it?

I disagree, for me pistol cal carbines just aren't as much fun without a reddot, which is bigtime advantage HiPoint. That and you can have 2 HP carbines for not much more$$ than one KT

I have a 40 and my son has a 9mm. I would do the 40 and buy a 40 pistol as well. The clips a interchangeable on the40 but not on the9mm.

If you really want to have fun with a 995, add a laser to it. I've got one and it is an absolute blast to shoot.

Seriously, a .45 hipoint that takes 1911 mags would sell like hotcakes!

Agreed, but it ain't gonna happen. I've already called them and asked about 1911 mags and they said "nope". It will have its own proprietary magazines. Which flat-out sucks, IMO. But I doubt we'll ever see them for sale anyway.
