Sorry its been my opinion ever since I can remember that Hi Points, be it pistol or carbine are the ugliest commercially produced guns of all time.

And the SKS is Haley Barry???? ROFLMAO! I even dressed mine up and they're still ugly even under all the make up. But, they sure as hell are reliable, acceptably accurate, and tough as nails. I'd never pick a high point over an SKS, but not on beauty, unless you figure beauty is as beauty does. The SKS wins that battle hands down.

Both mine are Chicoms. They have never failed to go bang and used to shoot them a lot, less so now days, but I've been through four or five 1000 round cases in those things back when a 1000 round case was eighty bucks. Ah, the good old days.

I have three SKS rifles and one Hi-point 9mm carbine. Never had a failure with any of them. I have 850 rounds through my Hi-Point and I really like that carbine. I have a Bushnell hand-gun scope mounted on mine and last time out I was having some fun and dumping mags. I was firing rounds so fast, son thought it went full-auto. :)

The Hi-Point never missed a beat though. Those Hi-Points run and run and run and have a life time warranty with excellent customer service.

If you get a SKS, I would recommend a Norinco or a Russian. Check the trigger if you can before you buy. Some of them have rotten triggers. Tons of travel, mushy and probably over ten pounds pull.

These are really two different type firearms. You'd probably really enjoy an M1Carbine. It does most of the stuff you want to do, really well.

Go with the SKS.

AIM Surplus has some Yugos in very good condition for $159.95. And there are a ton of different makes and models, in varying condition and at various price points, available on Gunbroker.

There's nothing wrong with a Hi Point carbine. I have one and I like it. They ain't pretty but they're reliable, they're accurate and they're fun to shoot.

That said, I have 2 SKSs and if I had to make the choice of one or the other, I'd probably take the SKS. Its a more robust and reliable gun and also more powerful ammunition. An SKS is probably a must have in any collection while a Hi-point is more of a niche gun.

THAT said, my Hi Point sits in the front of my safe, loaded, while my SKSs sit unloaded in the back. For the immediate emergency like a home invasion or a stray dog attacking my kids, ofr somethign like that, the Hi Point is a handier gun than than the SKS.

True enough. An SKS for home defense is not the best choice. They are heavy battle rifles though there are some shorter carbine/sporter type Norincos out there which are handier.

I love the way my Hi-Point looks. It's so fugly, it's beautiful! I call it my Ugly Stick. (stolen from the fishing pole so named:eek:)

Another plus for the Hi-Point is the ability to easily mount a scope or red-dot or just buy it that way. It is very accurate out to 100 hundred yards.

You'll notice that most of the respondents here don't actually say they have a Hi-Point, but they all have reason to talk trash about them...

I didn't notice anyone talking trash about Hi-Point. Several people said they think they're ugly, a few said they didn't care for pistol cartridge carbines, but I don't think anyone specifically "trashed" the Hi-Point.

Funny how folks keep banging away with their advice, oblivious to the fact that the guy got his question answered and already bought his carbine. :p

Best of luck with the Hi-point dispatch55126.

Lots of people here who, in their anxiety to impart their vast knowledge, can't be troubled to actually read the thread and know what's going on...

Hey, put a red dot on that HiPoint. It'll transform the gun tremendously. It doesn't have to be expensive, mine is just a $40 unit. Everyone wants to shoot it at the range.
