Does anybody out here regularly use a Hi-Power variant of any sort for CCW or even duty carry?

I'm wanting one of these fine pistols and am leaning in the direction of the FEG version...anyone with any feedback on this or other models?

Thank you!

There have been quite a few discussions on them lately. Do a search on ARCUS, FEG and FM and you should turn up lots of info. If you go the FEG route, look for the FEG PJK 9HP. It's the closest to the P-35.

I keep a Browning Hi Power as a secondary duty gun. Not as nice as my 1911, but it fits the same leather and has a better trigger than any DA auto. With 17 round KRD mags, it makes a powerful package. Mine has the factory Browning adj sights, which IMHO suck. They will be replaced with MMC nights as soon as I have some disposable income.

Zak,

That BHP done by Yost is beautiful. Is it a MKIII? MKII? Pre-MKII?

How's the trigger? How many rounds have you fired through it, so far?

Also, what grips are on it in the picture?

Just beautiful.

Steve

SteveW13,

Thanks. I am very pleased with the work he did on that BHP, and he's currently working on two more pistols for me.

That one is a 2002-manufacture Browning MKIII. Allegedly the MKIII's are a little stronger than the MKII and previous due to metallurgical changes and structural changes which occured when the .40 version came out. Besides that, they need less work to get reliable with HP ammo.

The trigger is excellent. It feels very similar to a 4 lb 1911 trigger. Ted used a novel method to set pretravel and limit overtravel, thus mitigating some of the problems built-in to the BHP trigger design.

I probably have about 1000 rounds through it so far... I know that's not much, but I've been shooting my 1911 in IPSC and 3Gun this year. I plan to wring it out when its twin comes home.. that way one can be ready to carry while the other one is filthy.

The grips are Speigel cocobolo (or was it rosewood?), fitted.

Gun Tests did an article, and they said buy the real thing, don't waste money on the copies.

I say the same thing, but I'm a gun snob.

I've carried a Hi Power quite a bit of the years. Like so much I have two of them. Excellant guns, and about the only pistol I've ever carried box-stock.

Hi Powers rule..

Mines a modified Israeli (hey Harold I know you are reading this its still not for sale :) )

I usually carry a 9mm Mk III in a Milt Sparks Versa Max II 1911 holster.

The gun is very slightly modified - sights painted, Spegel grips installed, and %$#! magazine disconnect removed. I also added a Wolff 18.5 lb recoil spring and a Buffer-Tech buffer.

I had a very minor problem early on with the slide stop being just a hair too long where it engages the magazine to lock the slide back after the last round, but I stoned 0.010" off, and have had exactly ZERO malfunctions in something over 5000 rounds since.

The Brownings I've seen appear better finished than the FNs - certainly they're prettier - and either seems to be better than the clones.

I like the BHP a lot!

I have a 9mm Mklll (loaded with 124gr. +p gold Dots) which is stock, except for Spegel grips, that I carry in a Galco Avenger. This is not my usual carry gun but it is one I always feel comfortable with.

I may soon remove the magazine disconnector.

Mag hint.

If you're going to carry the BHP, see if you can find some of the 15-round flush-fit Mec-Gar mags. There are some pre-bans out there, and you should be able to find them for about $50 or so. 15+1 Gold Dot +P is an impressive load for such an easy-to-carry pistol.

The only reliability problem I've had with them was that they'd lock the slide back with one round left. I fixed that by replacing the followers with Browning factory followers (eg, from 10-round mags); the front "shoe" is a little longer, keeping them tracking straighter in the mag body.

That new Charles Daly is essentially an FEG Pjk9hp with better sights and Rubber grips.

I've been shooting an FEG hi-power clone for years. It's my IDPA gun and the pistol I'd most likely grab if I needed a weapon.

Davidson's just sent me an e-mail saying they were available. MSRP is $499 Means street price should be a lot lower.

Wild,

What thumb safety is on your pistol, there? Great looking gun, by the way.

Steve

I have 2 Hi Powers. One is a Browning MkIII and the other a FEG clone.

Get the real one. It's really representative of what a fine pistol the design is capable of. The FEG, while nice for the cost, still has far to go before it's in the same league as the Browning.

Don't get me wrong, it's a reliable pistol, but one is a block of marble and the other a michelangelo sculpture. I don't regret getting the FEG at all, but I can't imagine not having my Browning. I'd sooner sleep in the street than sell that one.

As for carrying, I've still got 13 months to go before I am 21, but I'll let you know then. ;)

Cheers,
Wes

I have more than one Browning and FEG's . One of my FEG's is as smooth as any browning . I would feel safe carrying either if you have tested the gun with about 250 rounds.

I've got an Israeli FN Hi-Power that I often carry. It's a really nice carry piece in that I really don't care too much if it gets beat up. The finish on these is a black lacquer-something, and is nothing to brag about. The stocks are hard, black plastic. 13 + 1 and a spare mag is pretty well armed.

The mag disconnect is gone, and I've purchased, but not yet installed, an extended safety(Numrich - $16). The Israelis, generally carrying with an empty chamber, I guess, don't concern themselves with using the itty-bitty Mk1 safety. Sights are three-dot, fixed, and it really, really shoots to POA with 115 gr. ball ammo.

The Israeli mports generally come with a FrontLine leather, IWB holster and two 13-round mags. One of my mags is crap, so I picked up an Italian factory (Mec-Gar?) 13 rd. It also came with a double mag carrier, also leather. Mine was manufactured in the '90s, but looks as though it went through every conflict the Israelis have had.

Zak,

Would you mind describing the "novel" work Ted Yost did on your HP's trigger?

Also, did it affect the reset distance at all? I'm wondering if by limiting the overtravel the result is a shorter reset distance?

I have an HP and the thing that I notice the most about the trigger is the reset distance. I occasionally don't allow the trigger to travel enough thus negating the subsequent trigger pull.

Thanks,
Don.

ddc,

If I remember correctly, the overtravel is still limited by the "leg" in front of the trigger. For pretravel, he silver-soldered a plate where the mag safety foot used to be, and extended the old mag-safety mechanism to contact the plate.. then milled the plate to the right "height" for proper pretravel.

He worked on both ends (reducing overtravel, and take-up) and then did something to reduce reset distance with the trigger bar that goes up vertically to the slide. I haven't measured it, but the trigger now has significantly less reset distance.
