I was at a party this past weekend, and the home owners daughter was bored and approached me. She asked if I wanted to see something interesting (not what you may be thinking) and I said sure. She then showed me what appeared to be a shelf system built into the wall. In reality, it was a long door made to look like a built in bookshelf, but was on a hinge which opened up to reveal what was closet. In it there was a gun safe and misc stuff being hidden from general view. I asked where they had gotten the system and she didn't know. Naturally she said for me not to ask her parents because she did not want to get in trouble for having shown me the set up.

So based on my description, are any of you familiar with such a set up, and maybe have a link to a company that makes such systems?

I think you should tell the little brat's parents that she's not to be trusted with any more family secrets.

The first thing you need to do is make sure your kids aren't like this little brat. Otherwise, what's the point? Had the fancy room been a boring closet, the kid would not have been out selling tickets for the big show.

Gotta ask, how old is the kid and how old are you? Only reason is that if you and the daughter are peers, it's different from little sally six-year-old giving away mommy and daddy's secrets to their peers.

I agree, you should let her folks know that you know what they don't want you to know. :D

In all seriousness, I'd be rather upset if my (future) son or daughter told someone (even a family friend) about a secret hiding spot that the family had. Even more so if they told someone, and then asked that that person not tell me, because that shows that they knew they shouldn't be telling, but did it anyway.

Any good ( being the key word)custom cabinet shop will be able to build one for you.

i made one once in a house we remodeled,
problem with a secrets like this is someone just has to talk about it. human nature i guess.

Vector,

I agree with the others who state that you need to tell the parents; especially if the girl has access to the firearms.

There's a reason the room is hidden, and it should stay that way. Perhaps this is a one-time incident, but I suspect there is something going on in this girl's life that needs some attention. Are you a close family friend, or just an acquaintance who happened to be handy? Who else has been shown the room, thereby making access to the guns & other things that much easier?

This is no different than if the girl told you she was doing drugs or sneaking out at night & hooking or drinking & driving-her parents NEED to be informed of this, IMNTBHO.

I hate to say this, but that shelf shown by bubbles is against the code. That little room had a hot water heater, and probably a furnace too. The original doors were louvered for a reason...COMBUSTION AIR. When the shelves were added, no more combustion air.

Also, what good is a secret room that you have to open up every time you need to have your furnace inspected/serviced?

Either way...

It's the idea that counts and the guy has been kind enough to show us the "how to". I like it. Safety issues or not, heck it isn't my house.
But thanks for the "how to"! Great ideas.

We had a hidden room like that in one of the houses I lived in growing up. It was pretty neat, but everyone and their brother knew about it and at that point it was just for storage of misc. junk that should have been thrown out and the door was left open 90% of the time.

I think it's every guy's fantasy at one time or another to have a hidden room. You know, to hatch his plans for world domination....or just for bragging rights.

Sherlock's Baker St. Pubs are installing doors similar to these on the restrooms. It's kinda funny to watch people wander around **knowing** there's a restroom around there **somewhere** but just can't find it..

On the second issue in this thread. Um, bro, you're lucky not to be dealing with far bigger issues at this point than wondering where to get a trick door. It's not unheard of for a female to lure an older man into a private setting and_then_yell_'RAPE'. Not saying anything one way or the other about the specific young lady in question but *if* she had had those kinds of intentions (and really, could you have seen that coming) you'd be in a crock pot full of stuff you didn't need. Especially if it took place in a "secret room", after all the dust settled, you'd be lucky not to have to register with the local PD anywhere you move for the rest of your life.. Let alone the five years in the *pokey*.

It's paranoia like that that gives gun owners a bad name. Can we at least give fellow posters enough credit to know the difference between a friend's kid wanting to show them something of interest and a sexually knowledgeable instigator capable of making false rape accusations? To say it's even a remote possibility is overstating the odds.

Talk about a digression. :banghead:

While this is a really cool idea, I think it would only remain secret if you were hiding a small space like a closet or space under stairs. If you were using it to hide an entire room it would be obvious that there was a large area missing since most houses are symetrical.

Think so? Ask Kobe Bryant.. I'm just saying a man puts himself in an indefesible situation when he allows himself to be separated from a party of adults and in a room alone with an underage female. that's all. It's not unheard of. That's all I said. And it's not the "Gun Owner" in me that thinks that way. It's the little-guy-in-the-back-of-my-head that tells me not to put myself in a situation where it can only be my word against hers because most times, if it comes to it, courts (of law or of public opinion) will side with the girl's side of the story. Now guess what. You got a stink on you that won't wash off.

It's just bad judgement is all. It's letting yourself into a situation where you've set the environment against you. You've walked into a dead end alley. Trust me. There is no way out of a situation where the girl yells 'rape'. Go ask the Duke LaCross players if you want first hand testimony about what it's like to have a female falsely charge you with rape. It will follow those guys the rest of their lives. Even though they didn't do it.

I know that line of discussion is off topic, well off this topic anyways. But people are always talking on here about being "situationally aware". Well, that goes for having to change a tire in a bad neighbor hood and 15 year old girls. You have to be aware of the situation you're in. i think I'd rather have to change a flat on any road called MLK at midnight with the street lamps out than be alone in a room with a 15 yr old girl. At least I have a gun fighter's chance in the first case.

Oh and I really like the guncase/bookshelf idea. maybe with a combination lock like a highschool locker or a safe.

I'm pretty sure that's an electric water heater (no vent, no gas line), so combustion air shouldn't be a problem. It does need a pan, though. A little leak would quickly turn into a big, expensive mess.

It definantly is an electric as there's no flue or burner.

Kevin, safety lines can be run into a drain, but it must be gapped so that the discharge can be seen.

He's right. No vent, no air intake, no louvers necessary. A pan may be required, it's not a joke, but a necessity, especially above grade.

Furnace? Probably not under a stair case, the ductwork requires a lot of space, and needs a central location for efficiency.

As for the concealed compartment, I'm trying to brainstorm the same thing for a car console, with a decoy lockbox, just for the CCW when I get someplace no firearms are allowed. Cars can be really interesting to do.

Maybe I can find a drug shipper to give me some hints . . .

I'd suggest the airbag compartment, but that comes with its own risks. Passenger side airbags are rather useless IMHO, so that might be worth consideration.
