High prices at DoubleTap Ammo.

Anybody visited the DoubleTap website lately? I remember when I bought my first box of 10mm @ $23.95, now the stuff is $27.95 . I've noticed that ( recently )the prices go up about $1 every 45 - 60 days. I know that prices of all ammo is getting more expensive, but at this rate I may have to get rid of my Glock 20 . The practice stuff was about $19.95 a year ago, now it's $22.95. Don't get me wrong, I like DoubleTap, but this is starting to get rediculous.

I have been doing some study (informal) of the ammo prices. Specifically, I have been speaking with people who own the companies (those who are willing to take time to talk) who buy the bulk ammo, clean, resize and in some cases prime it for bulk sale.

Apparently the government has turned the sale of its brass to a private company. That auctioning company is so eager to sell the brass, copper and lead to smelters in Japan and China, that they are not even attempting to sell the brass, copper and lead as pieces for reload to wholesalers of bulk brass, they are crushing the brass and copper into massive bails, and selling those bails to Japan and China for $4.00 per pound. This time a bit over a year ago it was running about $1.00 per pound! This time a year ago she sold lead for 5 cents per pound. She (the owner) now sells it for nearly $1.00 per pound (untreated).

Ergo, these wholesale, bulk reloadable brass companies can seldom get brass, bullets, etc. The company's owner told me that it has NOTHING, NOTHING to do with war!! It has to do with selling the product fast...Japan and China are buying sight-unseen, even before it gets into the compactor.

She maintains that this same fact is driving up the price of all ammunition...bulk and factory. She says that gas prices are not the problem. She says, "The single problem is that Japan and China are buying up everything available before our businesses ever even get a chance to bid".

So, what have others been told?

I guess the question would be, why stick with DoubleTap if you could find it cheaper elsewhere?

You shoot 10mm and you don't reload? Why?

You can get everything you need to start reloading for less than 200 rounds of ammo.

Well, for one thing I honestly don't know how, and don't want to venture into a totally unknown field dealing with explosive material . Its probably not as difficult as I think, but I don't personally know anybody who reloads. I prefer to watch someone, than to just simply read instructions only. I may have to look into it soon though.

Greg, get over to the reloading forum. I just started this past January and I still have all 10 fingers. There's a ton of books, you tube videos, and THR members out there to help. Come up to central Nebraska and I'll give you a lesson. If you can use a scale and a set of calipers, you're set.

I think in September everything is going to take a big jump again. So you may want to stock up now.

DoubleTap still has the best prices on premium self defense ammo.

I can get 50 rounds of 124gr 9mm+P from DT for about .50c a round. At Midway it's .75c a round for Speer GoldDots, and probably more if I buy it from a gun shop.

10mm is even worse! $1.25(!) a round for Federal 180gr Hydra-shoks. It's .56c a round for DT's 180gr GoldDot load. You can order DoubleTap from Midway for about $1 less per box...but it is all sold out.

Stick with DoubleTap, or start reloading.

I may be missing something, but compared to MidSouthShooters.com Double tap is about double the price in every category!

DoubleTap comes in 50 round boxes. Unless you get LEO ammo, self defense ammo normally comes in 20 round boxes.

Reload. It doesn't require a lot of space, and it returns it's investment, especially for the very expensive calibers. I do 9mm, 38Spl, 7.62x39mm, 7.62x54R, and .303 Brit. People laughed when I got the two Russkie calibers, but they quit laughing when the surplus/cheap import started drying up/skyrocketing in price.

This is all the space I need, plus some room in the garage for the casting materials - just got into that very recently.
