You know one day somebody here posted about Doubletap ammo....I'd never heard of em before (never had a 10mm...though a G20 is on "my list" and I guess they are most noted for their stout loaded full power 10mm stuff. Deffensive ammo had been SCARCE for my .45....I had plenty for my 9mm's...but was tired of paying WAY too much for stuff I didn't really like as much as my favorites for the .45....so FINALLY I looked there....purchased some 230gr gold dots (hot but not unreasonably so in recoil) and Mike -reading that it was actually for my daily carry at our pawn & gun shop BONUSED us some 185gr wicked fast stuff just cause he thought we'd like it for our application (clearly a guy proud of his work & that loves what he does)

So now when I start to rotate out ammo (and in the case of my new GLOCK 23...the 3rd or fourth one I've owned over the years of that model...I must like em-LOL) I started to order some corbon 135gr...long my favorite .40 factory load ...then looked at Mikes load....even a tad hotter and with nickel plated cases for less than a buck a round! I used to buy all my ammo wholesale at the shop....now I just order a box here and there direct...even with shipping it's the best deal vs. wholesale plus tax. I ordered a box before leaving yesterday for my 23 (135gr load) and when I got home and put it on the nightstand I looked down and noticed ALL my boxes of carry ammo are becoming black and blue! It's just hard to beat the quallity and value on Double Taps stuff if they have a load you like...and after shooting some of his stuff in various guns I'm just sold on his quallity control to comparatively. It's rare to find someone doing something so well and yet pricing his product very competetively...as the BIG guys gouge us more and more...I gotta say...why pay them AND a middleman wholesaler? I think when my +P gold dots run out in 9mm I'll be all DT in my carry loads! and I HATE change...but better and cheaper is worth a pat on the back....so good job Mike and all at Doubletap...you are my favorite ammo source these days!http://www.doubletapammo.com

and whoever posted about recieving a shipment of "love" from Doubletap many months back thanks...your pic made me look at his website...and I've been well pleased with what I've recieved ever since...and finding my old favorites is still hit and miss at our wholesalers from week to week!...though not as bad as it was back then...there just wasn't any...for months! PS- my order from last night had already shipped by the time I checked my e-mail this morning!

I tried to read that, but the punctuation made my head hurt after the first paragraph long sentence.

DT has had some recent complaints about using Montana Gold Bullets and sending them as Gold Dots or XTP's. Complaints that the ammo does not chrono at velocities as listed.

Some below FWIW.

a few years ago everybody seemed to be tripping over themselves praising Mike McNett for his hot .40 & 10mm ammo using the Gold Dot bullet.

But recently there have been a LOT of complaints on all kinds of forums about McNett sending out orders that have substituted Montana Gold bullets in place of Speer's Gold Dot bullet. And a lot of people are finding that the bullet weight of the actual ammo they've gotten does not match that which they've ordered.

It seems that DT's quality control has really lapsed recently.

Reading chronos from glocktalk shows the ammo is considerably slower than advertised. Also, I ordered a box of .45 acp controlled expansion, which should have been the hornady xtp, turned out to be a Montana gold jhp, which don't expand worth a ****.

I can only speak for 10mm DT 200 XTP grain ammo. (I don't even know if this is still offered.) I have repeatedly chronographed it from the same gun (stock G20) in different weather conditions and altitudes and always get velocities right around 1100fps (+/- 20fps). The advertised velocity on the box is a 1250fps with a Glock 20. Despite the HUGE difference in advertised and actual velocity, the ammo. worked flawlessly and was very accurate.

It may be when you actually get what you think you're getting. I've also received ammo that was supposed to be XTP that were magically loaded with Montana Gold. Pissed that absolute hell out of me. I don't care if they start using Montana Gold, but don't pass them as XTP's which are a very good performing bullet. ESPECIALLY since these are often carried as SD rounds. I really wish Federal made a 10mm HST.

Yes, I was the one who called them out for using MG 180gr. JHP bullets in place of the advertised 200gr. JHP controlled expansion bullets. MG does not make a 200gr. JHP. I still haven't heard a thing from Double Tap about this. Like I said, they won't be getting anymore of my business.

I was commenting in another thread about my disappointment that Double Tap exchanged the Hornady 200gr. XTP for the Montana Gold bullets in their 10mm ammo. So imagine my surprise when I pulled down one of the cartridges to weigh the bullet and found it to only weigh 180grs.!!!! It is a 180gr. Montana Gold bullet loaded with 8.2grs of what appears to be a flattened ball type powder.
Double Tap is going to hear about this.

Anyway you get the idea. Never tried the ammo even when I was a big 10mm guy. ProLoad used to make hot 10mm's but alas...gone.

There are of course plenty of people who praise the ammo as well.

i bought a 10mm recently so i will have to order some. after reading so many good reviews on here, im really looking forward to trying them myself.

I've shot Doubletap as recently as a couple months ago. Some 357 mag and 45acp. Nothing wrong with it in my opinion. I do however prefer "For my hot rounds", to get Buffalo-Bore. They carry 32acp, 9mm makarov, as well as all the normal rounds. Plus, the prices seem to be a bit more reasonable. I've been shooting Buffalo-bore for quite a while. Never had a bad round yet.

When did all the negative stuff start? Its all news to me, But i don't follow them closely either. I have ordered a few box's of 10mm from them back when i had my G20 and if i didn't have DT ammo to shoot the gun was boring and i may just as well shoot a .40 instead.
My main issue as to why i dont order .40 and .45acp from them as thats the 2 calibers of my ccw guns is the bullet offerings are crap for the grain sized bullet i want.
Seems usually all the good bullets are all the lite grain stuff and no good 165gr .40 or 230gr .45acp that i like.

Anymore its not about so much the speed as it is the bullet its pushing imo. And DT hasnt been delivering choices i like.

230gr HST load?
165gr XPB .40?
Yeh, Ill buy those in a heartbeat.

DoubleTap is great stuff IME.

I think its most likley that people who are having problems with it have cheap/inacurate chrony's

Well that would not answer the other complaints about Montana Gold Bullets.

More then;

Just got a box of 180 gr. Double Tap controlled expansion for my G29. I thought they used the XTP bullet but instead I got the Montana Gold JHP. Anyone else noticed this change? I would prefer the XTP because of the good reputation XTP has.

Kinda of disconcerting for a box of ammo at $40 a pop.

I received an email back from Double Tap in one day. They replied that they had an issue with getting the proper supply of XTP bullets and so they went to Montana Gold. Double Tap said they sent them their specs for 180 & 200 grain controlled expansion JHP and will perform the same as XTP but with slightly more accuracy.

I would prefer they put that on their website before you drop $40 for a box of ammo.

My box of DT ammo says 200gr. JHP controlled expansion. I pulled two of the bullets and weighed them. They are 180grs. After I weighed them and found them to be 180grs., I checked the MG bullet site and noticed that they don't make a 200gr. JHP, only a 200gr FMJ. I contacted DT about this three times and heard nothing.

I have found the same thing. I just recieved an order on 2/5/10 I ordered the variety pack and out of 4 boxes only 2 are what I ordered. The 200 grn controlled exp went over the chrono @ 1200 fps from my stock glock 29 which equaled the two 180 grain loadings they sent me. I don't think I need to weigh them to figure that one out. I also ordered a 165 grain but they must have been out because I got 180's

First, last and only time I do business with double tap.

This isn't good. All of the negative complaints about Double Tap and their lack of customer service/owning up has me questioning if I should spend another penny there.

Etc...

NOW to be fair and I have no ax to grind with DT I can find far more positive responses about their product, less so on CS but plenty of satisfied customers. Seems the chrono issue is less as important as substituting Montana Gold bullets for other bullets and not making it well know.

But just wanted to point out that DT has detractors with some concerns and may not always perform the way the OP suggests.
