I have recently inheirted a High Standard Supermatic (sn: 422134) which I remember using some 42+ years ago and had not seen since. I have no idea what model number this gun is. It is in reasonable condition but well used. The gun has changeable weights (3 included) and adjustable sights. I considered putting a different sight on the gun but the gunsmith I talked to says it would be difficult to drill/tap thru the rib on the top of the barrel. I was just wondering what my options might be or should I just continue using the iron sights and enjoy the gun. It really is a great little target gun. Also, can someone please point me to a location where I could obtain replacement grips....the originals are in rough shape.
Thanks...

Your HS should have a number on the righ side of the slide to the left of the serial number. Something like S-101 . That would be the model and by google'n high standard supermatic for info you will find a mountain of info . You have a great 22 to keep and enjoy. You could use bright nail polish or arts paint and some gun shops sell site paint to high lite your sites if needed but i would not replace any as they are great terget site. Nice gun in most any condition.

How long a barrel does your Supermatic have?
That serial number was produced between mid 1951 to early 1954. It was part of the SUP series which predates the 101 series. 422XX was, I'd guess, sometime in 1953.
The 4.5" bbl was catalog number 9070. The 6.75" bbl was 9071.
Just in case - does the barrel have a push-button release that would allow take down? The SUP series did not, using instead a lever/dovetail arrangement that allowed the barrels to be removed. H-S offered a two barrel set.

I'd also say that it would ruin the gun to swap sights on it from a collector's perspective as well. And it's not just a case of collector value either. If your eyes can't deal with the sort of sights it has then I'd say find someone in the family that can use it as it is now and find another gun to put on sights that you can use. It would be a shame to modify a fine old gun of this sort away from it's original configuration when it was a good setup to begin with. Especially when there's no lack of newer guns that shoot almost as well and come with rails to allow mounting red dots or that can be set up more easily with whatever other sort of sights you wish.

Thank you for the information and advice.
The Supermatic has a 6.75" barrel with a lever take-down mechanism at the front of the trigger guard. There are no model designations anywhere except for the "Supermatic" on the left side of the slide. The right side shows only the serial number.
I must admit, I agree with the idea of keeping the gun original. It really does shoot very well - a whole lot better than the guy holding it. I will continue to use it as is - thank you again.

Please don't change the sights. HS made some fine guns. If this one is in good condition, the last thing that you want to do is take it out of it's original condition. I had a Supermatic Citation 106 Series. They made this gun 2 years. I believe that it was 1966 and 67. Mine had the 7 inch fluted barrel, barrel weights and compenstor. It brought $1000.

High Standard has made some very good, if slightly different from what you would expect, models. Ex-brother-in-law had/has a High Standard "Sentinel" (IIRC) .357 Mag revolver..HUGE grips, but about a 2" snubby barrel..sort of odd looking, but shot very well.

You know, all of my guns have this same issue....... :D :D :D
