Hiking Revolver, what do you pack?

Cold months find me out for fairly vigorous fitness hikes in cat country or urban rucks. My PD340 is loaded with 158g .38 +P with a Barnes .357 reload and carries well in the front pocket :

Summer time and the bears are up. In the high country this gal goes along tucked in an OWB holster and holding six shots of hot 180g hardcast:

What do you all pack when out wandering the hills?
Similar. S&W Model 66-1 with 6 inch barrel. I use 180gr hardcast from Buffalo Bore. Plenty of gun for bears and cougars here in Oregon.

With 180-grain Buffalo Bore hardcast, I've carried this revolver on a few mountain hikes. My hikes are all day hikes, so don't typically use a pack with a waiststrap, and the the 3" barrelled King Cobra in a G. Bowers pancake is comfortable and conceals well (not that I particularly worry about concealment in the national/state parks or on forest service lands).

Is it the one with the rounded tip? I have one of those, I really like it. Great little machete for wandering.
So sorry for the late reply. It is summertime and been out and about and soon to leave for Maritime Canada to visit in-laws. Will probably catch up on posting all around my web circle then because it is sit around a lot and gab or just hang out. More on the machete.

It is sleeker with no extra round tip. Strong and heavy requiring a good grip and good wrist whip. The blade doesn't bounce, flex or vibrate bad even with a solid whack on a solid surface. Not my tool of choice but it will cut a fair size tree. An example was riding with a dear departed friend thru woods trails on ATV's and came across a fallen magnolia tree across the trail with about a 4" trunk. He wanted to use his winch but I said give me a minute here. Cut thru it in 30-45 seconds with opposing angle strokes. It was soft wood though. I have various kinds of machetes (I do live in the Big Thicket of E. Tx) and this is by far my favorite. I have 4. I tried the D handled one and it hurt my hand near the butt end sometimes on a hard swing. I'll post the link but the price is too high on the manufacturer's link. I usually pay a shade over $30. Search : "Ontario knife 22" machete" --- it's on Amazon.

Here's the manufacturer link:

Quick note on my dear friend I mentioned above. He introduced me to this board in 2004 along with giving me great knowledge on firearms and stimulating me into the collecting and shooting aspects of firearms. I had plenty of firearms and several revolvers at the time but was an outdoorsman more than a gun enthusiast. His handle here on THR was "Airboss". I CPR'd him in his pasture unsuccessfully for 30 minutes post full cardiac arrest while we were doing some tree cutting and tractor work on April 30 in 2005. It is his old Farm carry gun, the S&W 629 no dash 4", that I carry sometimes.

As long as the word hiking in the term hiking revolver is not taken too seriously my choice right now is 3" king cobra with 38 special self defense rounds. Comfortable to shoot and carry. Frequently just stuff it the front pocket of cargo pants when concealment is not a big concern. If riding it would be a gp100 as weight doesn't matter.
Black bear, wolves and the rare cougar might hypothetically be a concern elsewhere in the state but not anywhere I've been in the last decade.

Ideally, I carry a 4” to 6” Ruger GP100, if “hiking.” If weight and/or bulk are a major consideration, a Ruger SP101 is my default minimum revolver, urban or rural. Moving up the scale, I have Ruger Speed Six revolvers, in both snub and 4” barrels lengths, if I feel a need for something a bit smaller than a GP100, or am wearing a cover garment that tends to grab the rubber on an SP101 or GP100 grip.

For the day that I may eventually walk among mega-fauna, I have a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan, which now wears an original-pattern GP100 grip. I will probably never load .454 ammo in it, preferring the “.45 Colt” part of its cartridge designation.

Not being a revolver purist, there are times, in “hiking” circumstances, that I supplement the revolver with a Glock, and/or a Benelli M2 shotgun.

Hiking trails in Northern Wisconsin I carry my S&W 28-2 4” in a OWB holster. Load is .357s, 168 gr hard cast SWC over a stout charge of 2400 powder.
You got to be careful up Nort they have those UPers coming over the border. And Da Bears are more dangerous than da ones in Chiacago...

357mag is a good choice for Northern Wisconsin  I like the 168 gr hardcast. I carry either 158 or 180 grain the 168 would be a good compromise.

Da Bears are more dangerous than da ones in Chiacago..

The ones in teddy grams are more dangerous than the ones in Chicago. Lol

For whatever reason this year ive hiked a good bit my old 10mm Glock. Seen a ton of black bear this year too. Always running the other way but they are out there.

I still say the 329 is perfect. Lot of recoil but in the event of a bear attack id imagine the ruined underwear would be more distraction than the recoil.

I don't feel too worried with any of those hikers

Here on my farm I carry a Taurus 85 Ultralite 2 inch in warm weather and switch to a stainless steel Taurus 85 three inch in cooler weather. Main concern around here is snakes (killed 6 already this year) trespassers and any unfriendly canines. These work for what I need and if I drop one of them or fall on them I just take a quick look at it and go on about my business instead of getting upset like I would with one of my S&W's

I love that holster, did u make it yourself or buy it from somewhere? I would like one for my 64-2
No. Had it made at a local shop. It uses a bladetec tec lock on the back to attach to the belt. I'm not sure on the rules about giving contact info for shops and venders. So if you want you can DM me and I'll give you the contact info.

If a a carrying a revolver in the woods it will be my 329pd or my 386pd. Just depends on how much horse power I think I will need.
