Pasco County superintendant disagrees with the idea.

But superintendent Kurt Browning said he would not place guards in elementary schools even if parents demanded it. He said he did not want to send the wrong message about school safety.

I've seen armed guards in some pretty eclectic places, including banks and high-end jewelry stores in ritzy malls. Never did it occur to me that I should stay away because their presence must mean the locations were dangerous places to be.

Regarding a Hillsborough dissenter:

Griffin, who argued all along for a more holistic approach to the problems plaguing schools, said she still believes armed guards will not cure what amounts to a lack of civility among parents and children.

"We have so many societal issues we are trying to address with this one shot in the arm, and it is an expensive shot in the arm," she said.

From their seats in the audience, the principals barely contained their emotions. "Oh, no," they whispered when Stuart suggested they wanted campus disciplinarians. A few walked out after Griffin's remarks.

The principals applauded when Edgecomb pointed out that the auditorium they were in had guards to protect everyone's safety. She asked: "How can I not offer that same peace of mind to those in our schools?"

But that last part is an outstanding response.

Spending $4 million per year makes no sense, whatsoever, to address a situation that is exceedingly rare!

Much simpler and free is to eliminate the prohibition against lawfully armed folks in schools. Odds are that you'll have a couple parents/teachers/staff armed there every day.

ETA: The only reason there are cops at Middle Schools and High Schools is to control/arrest the students. If it was truly about protection they would be at elementary schools too. Anyone in authority that says any different is being dishonest!

The illusion of safety? OK!

Well, then lets get rid of all those sprinkler systems and exit signs and fire extinguishers too! You don't want to send the wrong message that the school is a fire trap!

Moron. :banghead:
