History Channel's "Top Shot" on Sunday night

I love Gary James when he's on Handguns, but they even made him look kinda like a tool. It's like they told him "Ok, try to look cool and tough like Colby."

With the infighting, it will be interesting to see if they swap some members between the teams before it is over.

It must be getting decent ratings for History. They reran all the old episodes again yesterday afternoon.

I thought that Caleb took "The Highroad" :D with how he handled the situation.

Next week's preview with the cowboy shooting looks like it could be decent. For someone who is not into the shooting sports, they have showcased a nice variety of firearms. It would be cool to see some full-auto shooting before it's over.

Have to admit, Adam's behavior was over the top and rather soured me to the episode, maybe not the show. His antics totally took the blue team off their game.

The shooting was fun though. Liked that the red team was using that practice to figure out the windage/drop at each range by taking the same sight picture with each shooter to create a 'group'. Pretty clever actually.

Hi everyone, just got back from vacation down with Blake and Pete from the show. (Louisiana is awesome by the way) Thought I'd chime in for the recent developments, especially since the BrianEnos thread has now been closed. Pretty much what you're witnessing here is a villain being created- because villains are interesting. There was definitely a great deal of animosity going on then, no question about it. I knew it would make for great TV as it was going on.

Pretty much some things were said in anger, and when people are worked up about something they say some pretty hostile things. (Including that widely requoted comment about the Coast Guard.) I'm just saying don't make a blanket judgment about a person based on a single event. If you've ever just been really spun around the axle about something and spouted off about it, imagine taking those worst moments and broadcasting them to everyone.

Knowing Adam and having spoken with him about the event since, he's still upset about it and largely feels that he was justified in going after Caleb so voraciously. That being said, you're still viewing a caricature of someone. I'm not going to comment on who I think is right here- you should ask both people and solicit their opinions (and they are widely available online), but still wanted to say that like everyone else on the show, Adam is a complete person and you're just seeing one side. The situation is more complex than it appears.

The flintlock rifle they were using looked to me like a very cheap reproduction. No wonder the lock wouldn't ignite reliably. You would think they could afford a decent rifle that would actually fire. Notice that once they started using Gary James' flintlock that it didn't misfire.
A quality flintlock or caplock is capable of astonishing accuracy. Nothing at all like what was shown last night.

Quite true.

I like the basic idea of this show, but am convinced that the format needs a complete revision.

I'll admit that I am a closet fan of the show. I like how the producers here have tried to make the shooting aspects interesting: Tannerite explosive targets, physical movement through mud, under barbed wire, shooting from ziplines, moving plates. It certainly beats some of the sitting at a bench and then firing at a piece of paper. Boring, boring, boring.

What I really like about the challenges is the way that I know I could be competitive in them. 50-100 yards with Old WWII and Korean War Guns? WOOT! Tube shots with a Beretta 92? WOOT! 200 yard archery range firing into a big assed circle? WOOOT! Firing from a zipline (sounds cool, never done it). Smokepole firing? Hehehehe. Noose rope firing with a lever gun? CLASSIC! If nothing else, I'd LOVE to be able to try some of these courses of fire and I envy the hell out of the contestants. I don't think anyone of us would begrudge them for going after 100K either.

Yeah, I can also do without the "Survivor" "drama" as well. However, that's what "On-Demand" and the Fast Forward button are for! Warm up(watch), Fast Forward, Challege(watch) Fast Forward, Elimination vote (fast forward) Elimination Challenge (watch). It reduces the show to 35 minutes of shooting without the crappy drama. I for one am glad to see an entertaining shooting show like this finally come on the air. If it introduces more people to shooting, fantastic! Way to Go History Channel!

As for the competitors, I don't really care, nor will I have an opinion of them until I meet them in person. I think it's neat that Mike Seeklander has appeared online and mentioned that he messed up. That shows a nice kind of humility. Brad Engman's sojourn here has also shown that he's a nice guy. Either way, just remember that these guys (and gal) are just like you and me, with a weebit more training in some aspects that is on a show that uses editing to create high drama and then expose that person to a 30 second blip of a soundbyte. Good on ya Brad for coming to The High Road!

You mean what we see on TV isn't real? Even in a reality show? :what::what::what::what:
;)

Thanks for reminding us that there are always two (or more) sides to every story. Adam could do a lot for his cause by admitting to some of the rather hateful things he said on the show. Here's hoping that's still to come on the show or elsewhere.

I wonder if some of those here who were so critical of the contestants on Season 1 will submit an application?

Most won't be able to with their busy schedules (helping their Mom carry their laundry down to their basement "apartment"), but I would assume that out of the thousands of members there are some who would do well.

I don't know that I could be characterized as being "so critical," but I filled out the audition form last night.

I enjoy watching the show, but last week the name calling was over the top. To date I think Jim’s departure has been the best example of class and professionalism. As others depart, I hope they follow his lead.

I have to add that Caleb left very respectively as well.

and unfortunately, ive watched it 50x and there was NO way for Jim to not hit both of those plates at the same time. His only option was to lose.

He simply should have shot the stem of the swinging target. That would have dropped the front target to the ground, breaking it within the rules, and would have left the other target untouched. I can't for the life of my not understand why he didn't do that.

And for the tight sphinctered, yes, that's sarcasm.

I thought the flintlock shoot was interesting. I have only fired a flintlock once. The pan ignites off and throws a teaspoon of hot particles right in your eye. I decided that I would develop a terrible flinch if I continued shooting the things.

My .54 round ball caplock, for me four inch groups at 100 yards is good. Pie pan sized groups happen, the guys on the TV acted as though they expected centerfire accuracy.

Still, I just do not see how any can hit anything at distance with a firearm that is not zeroed in for them.

Each XTC highpower match I shoot, I burn 88 rounds trying to find a good zero. Sometimes I find it, and then I always lose it.

Can’t imagine doing any good at all with someone else’s gun.

What bothers me is the lack of information about the weapons: Caliber, bullet weight, history, etc.
What bothers me is that what little information they give is often wrong.

What bothers me is that I keep getting this show confused with VH1's Tool Academy! ;-)

I must have missed something by not hardly watching the show. What did contestant "A" do to earn the ire of contestant "B".? I turned the program on when one was calling the other a rat fink.

I agree that Adam was the weasel.

However, while I don't think Caleb is a "rat fink" for telling, he made a major strategic blunder by disclosing the info when he did. He should have kept it in his pocket and waited until AFTER blue team lost a team challenge (if they lost). By spilling the beans before, everyone on team blue became so riled up that they had virtually no chance of winning the team challenge (can't function effectively as a team with that much drama going on), and furthermore, he didn't have the votes to do anything about it (Caleb plus Blake and JJ equals only 2 votes, not enough to save his skin).

Adam and company had what, 4 votes (or was it 5)? Their plan was to pit JJ and Blake against each other. By spilling the beans, Caleb incited Adam and his allies to vote him out, yet gained only 2 allies in the process, not enough votes to change the outcome. He should have kept his mouth shut before the Team challenge, and in the event of a loss should have QUIETLY told Blake and JJ. The three of them wouldn't have had the votes to keep either Blake or JJ to going to the challenge, but they would have had the votes to keep BOTH from going. The three of them together could have voted Adam (or better yet, the weakest of his allies, Tara), to go to the challenge as well. The plan of pitting the 2 pros against each other would have failed, and Blake or JJ would have a decent shot of winning. That's really the only way to play it, as I see it.

I thank whomever invented the 30-second skip button everytime I go to just the shooting bits of the show.

Amen brother. I watch both To Shot and Dancing With the Stars with that button.

Next person to say rat fink should get punched in the face. I wish Adam got let go in the last episode.

I thought the back stabber bad mouthing the rat fink used all three parts of gall. My wife thought Adam sounded like a little girl.

Jim got selected for elimination challenge last episode and lost. Then this last episode needed expertise in flintlock and Winchester '73--weren't classic guns Jim's forte?

Jim is well versed in older military rifles. He also has experience with the black powder types. unfortunately he wasn't around for it.
