I am looking for information on the history of the Model 29. I am mostly interested in when the 29-2, 29-3, 29-4, and the 29-5 came out and what the modifications might have been. I am looking for a reference guide so I can review when I am purchasing. A web site or book would be great.

Thanks

The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson, Supica and Naha, 3d edition, is a good starting point.

Is this a book that I can order and still get, do I need to call Smith & Wesson?

Its in print and I belive I got my copy for about $30, maybe, $40. I think Amazon has it and its available from one of the authors, Jim Supica, google his name or the title and you'll find a source. You should, as suggested above, check out the Smith forum, I remember reading a thread there recently by a guy that collects only 29's, and he was talking about, IIRC, the overlap in the production or numbering of the 29, 29-1 and 29-2.

I am a member over at the Smith forum and have learned a lot there so I can tell you that the 29-2 came before the 29-3 and the 29-5 came after the 29-4....if you want more info than that, you might want to post a question over there and someone with even more knowledge than me will tell you the various permutations. The book would be good too.

Get the Standard Catalogue, it's great. I have the original, 2nd, and 3rd. Wouldn't part with any of them! You can also usually find them at your local Barnes & Noble or Borders. The only problem is that you'll want a lot more guns when you see it.

A couple of years ago the S&W Colltor's Assoc published an issue of their Journal totally devoted to the History of the Model 29 in honor of the 5oth Anniv of the gun. It was written by Bill Cross and Bob Radaker, the world's foremost authorities on the Model 29. That issue will tell you all there is to know & more about the Model 29. It is out of print, but a few copies may still be available to members of the S&WCA. If you are interested in S&Ws, there's no excuse for not belonging to the Association. Membership applications can be downloaded from a link at the S&W Factory web page.
