Smith Model 29

In the near future I am looking to purchase a Model 29. I am confused on which one would be the best to buy such as a 29-2, 29-3, etc. I would be looking to spend around $500-$600.00. I am not very well versed in Smith
products. Thanks for the help.

Personnally I think if you can get a 29-2 cheap,say $400 or so that would give you the pinned and recessed features without the premium price of the earlier models. IMHO the lazer roll marked, the firing pin in frame , the IMI guns are a disgrace. The lack of barrel pinning was a cheap out feature that makes you watch for alignment issues IMHO , again. Watch for cylinder end shake in guns that had heavy use. These guns CAN be easily tuned up if not butchered.

I would not worry about the not having the pinned barrel myself - I think I have only owned one Smith with a pinned barrel. Never had any barrel alingment problems on my other Smiths that did not have a pinned barrel. I'll put my 629 Classic up against any recessed chamber, roll stamped pinned barrel 29 or 629 in accuracy. Not saying the old Smiths were not nice - they certainly are. But some of the newer guns I have owned from the 80's , 90's and year 2000 are exceptional shooters as well.

I have a 'pre mtn gun' 1989 629 that is real sweet also. I got it (luckily) when I brought back a 2001 mtn gun with rear sight cut machined off center. They happened to have it from a guy who traded in for a 629 classic. No doubt SOME of the new guns S&W puts out can shoot. No doubt the ones with improved 'endurance' mods are longer lasting BUT like everything else there are "guns for the masses and guns for the classes" and barring custom shop or individual rarieties the pre Bangor Puta guns were in the later class. Hell ,any thing made before 90's USUALLY was better than today IMHO.
