D'oh! This is for Univ. of Tennessee, not U. Texas, but they need it just as much as we do in Austin. Let me say personally, that as a responsible (full time job, new baby, etc...) grad student, I find the campus self defense policies ridiculous. There have been three armed robberies on campus in the past three weeks, presumably by the same guy, and all UT police can do about it is recommend this?
"UTPD asks all students, faculty, and staff to be vigilant and report suspicious activity. Once again we're advising our colleagues to stay in groups as there is safety in numbers. Do not study, work, or walk alone. If you must study or work alone, lock yourself into your room / study room / office or sit facing the door.
If you must walk alone, stay in well lighted areas were there are other people around. You may also contact UTPD at 471-4441 to arrange for a Sure Walk escort."
I know of one sure way to deter crime and it has nothing to do with University Police.
Oh yeah, I did my undergrad at Texas A&M, so thank you Deer Hunter.
