I was watching a little VH1 this morning and there was a commercial along the lines of 'Top 10 Reasons to Get Tested for HIV'. It started at 10 and counted down to 1 with things like 'Your Mother' or 'Your Spouse', I can't recall exactly - except for #1. Each reason had a little graphic or photo to illustrate the point.

#1. "Because You Are Not a Killer". The graphic was a target silhouette, with bullet holes. (And not all that great of a grouping, IMHO.)

This really caught my attention, I seem to always see the (not so) subtle anti-gun snipets. I always find it amazing how much effort is expended putting these little anti- messages in mainstream media.

Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but I would prefer if that statement were reworded to "Because You Are Not a Murderer". No graphic needed. Though, if required, I suppose a photo of the Senator from Massachusetts next to the Chapaquidic Bridge would suffice.

That's like the local News showing a picture of a gun behind the news anchor when he/she is reporting a murder. It doesn't matter if the victim was beat to death with a chair leg, there's still a gun on the screen.

I was watching a competing news station who put up a revolver in an over the shoulder shot and then proceeded to talk about a fatal stabbing. It must've hurt to have been stabbed to death by the barrel of a .357!

Here's another entry for that wretched list:

You don't want to have a disease that drains off far too much research funding from other diseases that are not the direct result of promiscuous sexual behavior.

What sort of background graphic would VH1 choose for this particular reason? Hmm?
