Hodgdon Longshot in 40 s&w

Hey Everyone. Let me start off by saying i am new to the forum so if I am in the wrong place just let me know. On to the fun stuff.


I am also new to the game of reloading. I want to load ammo for my p226. In my part of the world, the only powder I can get my hands on for pistols is Hodgdon longshot. I have seen their loading data sheet that is online for 165gr BERB FP bullets, but I want to know if those measurements will be the same for all 165 gr plated bullets. Rocky mountain reloading has 165 gr flat nose plated bullets in stock and I just wanted to make sure that these measurements would be ok for me to use before I spend some money. I use Longshot for my 40 s&w and I load plated bullets... It's a great powder IMO.. It fills the case pretty good so no chance of double charging one or you will know it... I like 7.5 grains under my 155 gr berrys bullets at 1.125 OAL...

Sorry I can't help with the plated bullets question, but Longshot is my exclusive powder for the .40- LOVE it for said cartridge.

I have used Longshot with the X-Treme 180 Gr HP in .40 and it works well.

As long as you do not load the other brand bullet deeper, you should be OK. As always, start low and work up.

You got lucky and found what is probably the best current powder available for the 40 S&W now that HS-7/W571 is no longer available.

Plated bullets usually use high end lead bullet data or middle of the road jacketed bullet data. I would go too high with plated bullets since they act more like lead bullets than jacketed.

Yes, Longshot has been my #1 for .40 for years. Just follow reduction protocol from jacketed to plated, or from the other end up (lead) and you'll be fine. I've actually been having excellent results with Longshot for more than just .40, to include 9mm and 38 spcl.. Great stuff!

I load 8gr of Longshot in my 40 pushing 180gr XTPs. That is a max load but it cycles just fine in the a robust XDm platform.

Well this is great news beacuse there are still 8 jugs or so left at the shop. Looks like I need to pick the rest up . So according to hodgdons data site, 6.9 grains will b the minimum for a 165 grain plated bullet with 7.8 being the max. If I used 165 grain fmj round, would 7.4 be a good starting point? Thanks again for all of the help.

I'm not telling you what to buy and not to buy but you do realize I pound of powder = 7000gr. @7.0gr per load that's 1000 round per/lb so 8 lbs will load ~8000 rounds. While 8000 rounds isn't all that many you will also need 8000 bullets and 8000 primers so you might want to work on that too. lol

Of course lol. I was just told by the man behind the counter that they order componets at the start of the year and once they sell out that's it. That doesn't sound like a good business idea but I do want to get a few to save. Primers are next to impossivle to find around here. Gotta rely on gun shows to bring those out right now.
