Hello,

I'm getting ready to reload some 40 S&W for the first time and need some advice. The bullets my local store had in stock were Winchester 165gr truncated cone that measure 0.400 diameter and I have Titegroup powder. My Hodgdon data refers to the Barry 165 gr BERB FP(it sure looks the same), Hornady doesn't reference a 165g bullet at all, and Lyman lists a 165 gr TMJ, but no mention of my powder.

So....Is this the same basic bullet? Can I use the same load data for the Winchesters?

Thanks,
wooldl

I'm guessing the Winchester bullet is not a cast bullet. If that's true the Winchester bullet is a jacketed bullet and the Berry's bullet is plated. Plated bullets use lead bullet data or starting to medium charge jacketed bullet data. You can use the Berry's bullet data.

I just checked the Hodgdon site and they have load data for a Sierra 165gr bullet and Titegroup. It seems to be the same as the data for a plated bullet so you are in good shape. I would use the Sierra bullet data although in this case the Max charge is the same.

Hodgdon load data for Berry's 165 gr FP (BERB) is for plated bullet and I would use it for loading 165 gr jacketed FP bullet.

Get a max length case gauge. I have a CZ 75 that must have a tight chamber. Cast bullets mic .401 needed a unreal crimp to chamber. Took some time to get the seat and crimp die set to where they would chamber. With jacketed bullets which mic .400 you probably not have that problem.

One one-thousandth of an inch is not going to force you to use an "unreal crimp" to make the round chamber. You are talking about .001" which is extremely small...
