I finally got to put the enfield action to the test. I shot a 75 lb. or so boar at about 70 yds. with my No. 5 mk1 using s & b 150 sp ammo. Due to my failing eyesight I installed an sk scope mount and a bsa (excuse me - I know) huntsman 1x4.5 scope. I've been tinkering with the rifle for several years now, but yesterday really put things into perspective. Hog number 1 was no problem. Hog number 2 appeard right after the first shot. I had already chambered another round and let me tell you guys that action is so DARN QUICK. It's incredeible. All I heard was 2 shots and the sound of 3 rounds being stripped from the magazine. My son was about 300 yds. away and he called me to see if that was me that shot. He shoots a lever 1894 marlin and he thought I was using my 742 remington.

This is the first thing I've killed with this old rifle and I'm pleased as can be. The bullet entered his right shoulder and exited his left. He left a very good blood trail and only went about 10 yds. He's in the freezer now and will be bbq tomorrow night along with some deer and squirrel.

By the way I though I had missed the second hog, but my son heard both shots and told me both were hits. It all happened so quickly and can only assume I was a bit far back on the second one as it was't standing still. We checked for blood and never found any. I hope it was a complete miss.

All in all a very nice hunt. The gun was flawless and the ammo did exactly what it was supposed to.

I took a lot of pictures with my neighbors old digital camera. First time I ever used one. They are great. No film to buy or develop. I'm going to see if I can get one of my boy's to post some pictures here.

Do you know any good suppliers for the No. 5 Mk1. I have the jungle carbine but would kind of like the No. 5 like my uncle had. I've been looking at the local gun shops put so far no luck. Thanks for the helpful report.

I'm assuming you have a fake "jungle carbine" and not a real no5 mk1. There are a lot of real ones on gunbroker.com, but they are not cheap. Keep looking - put the word out at your local gunshops that you are looking for one. Good luck.

Heck, I want to post pictures too. The only problem is this - my neighbor has the camera and I need one of my son's to post. I took a lot of pictures, but I don't know how to post. I just talked with my youngest son and he and his friend will come over tomorrow and post.

Was the recoil as bad as it has been reported to be?

I almost have a No 5 "u-fix-em"/gunsmith special gun ready to test fire.

The recoil was not noticed. One usually doesn't feel recoil when shooting game. Actually my no5 was purchased already sporterized. It has a synthetic stock and was polished and blued. It is quite a bit heavier than the originals so the recoil is quite pleasant. It shoots very well.

I hunt hogs here in Tx with an Enfield No4 Mark1 with 180gr Remingtons Have killed 4 hogs this year along. Avg weight is around 225lbs Killed them dead in their tracks Mine is still in the original configeration. Good luck hunting Scott
