Okay, a while back I had pigs coming up in my back yard ruttin' it up back there. I baited a spot, put my motion detector out, and 4AM it started beeping incessantly. I got up, grabbed my SKS, and went out on the back porch. I turned on the green laser and saw eyes glowing back at me. I had cataracts at the time and was legally blind, but I just settled the crosshairs between a pair of eyes and let her rip, one 100 lb pig for the freezer. :D By sun up it was on ice.

So, along those lines, I just went out back and set up a motion detector. I have it as far back in the woods as I can get it and still get it to signal my receiving unit at the house. It's supposed to have a 400 ft range, but it's only a little over 300 feet through the woods. Trees probably limit range, I'm guessing, but it's far enough into the woods to keep 'em out of my back yard and garden.....I hope.

I put the game camera there and dumped some corn. Don't have a feeder set up, just figured on dumping corn there to attract them like I did before. If I get pigs on the corn, it'll be kinda spooky creeping back there for the ambush, I reckon. I figure to use my M4, 62 gain TSX handloads, and the green LED lamp that's on it. The green laser on my SKS works a lot better, but I'll be no more than 40 yards from 'em when I get in sight of the spot I baited and my cataracts have been fixed. :D

I've had a spotted pig coming to my feeder for months now, an occasional black one. That spotted pig lives in my woods I think. I don't believe he's transient. He's sorta large, fat looking, and tasty. :D This strategy worked once. I'm tired of trying to guess when the pigs will be at the bait. Ol' Spotty has been coming in late evening 9-10 lately. Hopefully, he'll find the new spot. Of all the techniques I've tried, the motion detector and my trap have been the only successful techniques since we moved here to hog heaven. And, the motion detector thing is FAR more exciting than just shooting 'em in the trap, though I'll take my pork any way I can get it. :D

Any other critter I would fuss about, then refresh my page before posting because I don't like to badger people about my personal tastes for things that are moral issues. Truth is, my opinion is worth what people pay for it around here, and all that really matters is if a person is ok with what they are doing, and that they are doing it legally. That said, this is hogs were talking about. Bait inside a series of punji stick pits is a bit much, but anything shy of that tactic is fair game.

Actually, to my knowledge, there are no rules/laws to hog hunting/killing, just that you're encouraged to kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out. :D The pungi stick thing actually wouldn't be a bad idea except I don't want my dog falling in one. LOL I do have a hog trap, but it hasn't been real productive lately.

OK, so I was confused when I clicked on this thread.... Thinking perhaps the back yard pigs were close & loud enough to wake you and were shot from your bedroom window. That motion detector method is brilliant.... I should use that in a deer blind.... I could nap until my "wake up" call comes via the motion detector and then I could wake up refreshed and ready to fill my tag, LOL.

This is a different kind of hogging than I imagined...I knew some guys in the Army that...

Pigs are really terrible invasive species. Delicious, but just heinous on the environment. Kill them all and eat them or donate them.

Actually, I thought about that hunting hogs on a dark night. Wait until the receiver goes off, THEN flick on the green light. :D

I've scrapped my plans, though. I can't get a good signal through the thick woods. Seems this particular cheap motion detector (Harbor Freight) seems to need a clear view to the receiver or range is greatly reduced. I don't wanna set it up in the back yard like last time. Don't want anything getting attracted to my garden. I messed with it for a while this morning, but just couldn't get a good consistent signal.

I used some old prison radios a friend gave me, with a PVC pipe on a t-post with wire antenna up in the air, I can make them work 2 miles from our cabin.

I used a digital voice recorder so I know what location is going off.

It is fun playing Indian sneaking up on them but I had also envisioned remote hunting but the website hunting thing prompted legislation outlawing it before I was finished. Finally finished it one day when I was bored and played with it for an hour or so.
