I've been on several hog hunts, and for the most part it was from stands overlooking feeders. Just wondering how much luck people have in a stalking hunt, or (and this will be way out there) in a gilly's suit? Just wondering what would be the most efficient hog hunt. I have to admit after 3 -4 hours in a stand I got to get up and move the old legs, and personally unless you really need the pork shooting a hog bending over eating corn isn't really hunting...it's just eliminating. Probably catch heck for that statement.

In Central Florida -I am a new hunter and have yet to bag a hog.
Went with some experienced hunters on a couple stalks. Nobody wore a ghilly suit.

Saw lots of very fresh sign like new tracks, wet scat, fresh damp rooting with moist stalks of plants but unable to see one hog.

It was fun tromping the woods and learned quite a bit but wish I could have bagged one.

Hogs mostly are active very early and very late and do most of their feeding under the cover of darkness. They are very smart.

Most of public hunting is ground type. Stealth and luck is all there is to it. STaying close to known hog signs , being there early before sunrise and thorighout the day would be best. SUmmer time near ponds is a best spot to see them coming for a drink.

Best way to hunt 'em is at night over bait, but I also hunt public areas and just accept that I probably ain't gonna see one. :rolleyes: If there are a LOT of hogs in the area, though, you can see 'em. They'll bed up in thick brush. Sometimes by still hunting, you'll chase 'em up or you'll see a tail flicker. I've done that even mid day and taken hogs that were in bed. If you're in really heavy, thick cover, that makes it tough. Look for wallows and such fresh sign and just hang out there and become a tree. :D If a hog gets hot during the day, he may wallow. You just never know when or even where in a given area infested with 'em, but yeah, best times for hog movement are very early and very late. They really like to get going right at dusk if they've been bedded up all day.

Hogs have very poor eyesight so it dont matter what you wear, just keep the noise down and scent under control and it should not be a problem.

Most of my hunting is done from stands at ponds or wheat fields. I do sometimes hunt on the ground. Hunting against the wind works for me: On a windy day they can't see you very well and they cannot smell you. If it is a noisy wind they cannot hear you either. Have sometimes gotten within 20-30 yards of hogs feeding in the open by hunting against the wind.

Hogs have much better eyesight than you are being led to believe. They have poor night vision{ pretty odd for a mostly nocturnal critter} but see just fine out to 100+ yards in daylight{or dusk}
