shots are not always that close in Texas, I shot 6 last night and they were all200 yards or more, just depends, I had one run up behind me so close I couldnt find him in my scope. as far as guns, my .17hmr kills many a hog at 100 yards. my favorite calibers are .22-250, .270,.308, 6.5 x 55 and 7mm-08. I use AR15s, AR10s, M1A, mini 14, mini 30. my favorite pistol is a Ruger BH Bisley in .45 colt but .44 mags go with me sometimes....I got so many hogs...so little time. sometimes there are so many in a pasture, there is no way I can count them. sometimes I catch em under a feeder and open up with a semi auto and lay em out.
man where are you at?! i know hogs are a PEST here in tx, but damn that many,. my 30-06 ought to work on em pretty good,. biggest hog taken for me weighed in 370- one shot 180grain dropped..

whatt?. the 30-06!

:what::neener::banghead::banghead:what about 30-06?? havent seen it even mentioned for hogs?! is a one shot dropper, for a good distance, and up close,., its what i personally prefer, the round is for bout anything depending on grain

I've killed dozens of hogs with a .30-06 or a .308 using either 180 or 165 gr bullets. My daughter killed this one several weeks ago with her .30-06 and 150 gr Hornandy IL bullets.

I think a great hog gun down here is the mosin nagant M44. Beat it up, bang it around, scratch it up in the bush, no problem. Heavy bullet is good also. Handgun in 45LC or 44mag would be fun too.

If there is some distance between me and the hog (about 100yds), I wouldn't feel under gunned at all with my BLR in 257 Roberts. If were talking about brush hunting, its my Gold Fusion packing 3" Mag Barnes Slugs or a BAR ShortTrac in 7mm-08 AND both would be backed by a Browning Hi-Power in 9mm.

If I can't maintain my advantage by range, I will maintain it with fire superiority.

I haven't gone hog hunting yet but I just sighted in a 2x7 viper on my BLR .358. It's my plan to try this one on hogs, so I'll hopefully let ya'll know how it works.

And if you need to, you can deploy the folding bayonet to finish it off.

How do .224 Hornady 75gr BTHP work on hogs? I know they're match bullets, but would they give the needed penetration out of a 20" AR?

I've only hog hunted a couple of years. I use a 300 WSM, Ruger 77/44 (44mag) rifle with silencer, or a RRA .223 AR platform. It seems shot placement is very important.. I have shot a couple with my 300WSM that ran a little afterwards (night time shots with flashlight and no night vision.) One was gut shot and the other one was a quartered shot that went through lung, liver, abdominal cavity, and exited. Shot two small ones at same time with 44mag and they dropped since they were lined up with shoulders overlapping. Got a 250 pounder this past Fri. with an AR15, 68 gr BTHP. I shot him twice in the shoulder quickly and he didn't move. It was a 40 foot shot, maybe, and the 68 gr rounds were devastating. They both exited with 1" plus holes through the opposite ribs. Lungs were half gone and the heart cut in two. I stalk hunt mainly so I like the repeating nature of the AR without losing sight picture in the scope.

I shot a 250-lb-er with 69 gr BTHPs this weekend and he didn't move. Double tap to shoulder.. killed both lungs and cut heart in half. Exit wounds in opposite ribs an inch plus. Was using PRVI Partizan ammo from Cabelas.

I use a rossi 92 in 454 casull. a 250grn barnes XPB over a stiff shot of win296 has been extremely effective. Recoil is a bit stiff, but I've never had to shoot a hog more than once.
