Sitting here watching "Hogs Gone Wild" on Discovery. I'm having trouble understanding their tactics. I'm watching these 2 guys in Hawaii who trapped 4 pigs in a pen. They are lassoing the pigs individually and getting in the pen with them. The one guy who was in the pen said "becareful, we don't want to kill her", talking about the sow. Why the hell don't they just shoot them?

There is also a couple in Texas who are trying to catch hogs using dogs on a million dollar cattle ranch. Their main dog just got a cut on it's stomach from a tusk. Why aren't they just shooting them instead of risking their dogs lives to chase them?

Could someone please explain this to me? It just seems more reasonable to harvest them and use the meat.

Thanks

I was wondering the exact same thing, but I did hear one of the pig hunters from hawaii say that the pig he caught will be given to a family in need for food.

I just wanna hear the thud as a 405 gr bullet hits one out of my 45-70 like a freight train! does that make me a bad person:D

I always thought I would like to hunt them with my 454 or long range with my 375 H&H sounds like fun

I know the people down south hate these things, but I'm dying for a chance to get one. From what I understand, they're starting to establish a population here in NY. 2 pigs were taking last year about 45min from my house. If I was a farmer I would hate them, but since I'm not, I want one on my smoker!!

That's exactly my thought. I thought is was pretty inhumane the way they went about it. I made the wife change the channel.

Maybe the hog hunters are felons and can't use firearms.

It would be far more humane to put them down with a 7.62x54R but remember this is for TV!

While it is for TV, folks do regularly hunt and trap in the manners shown there. Hunting with the two types of dogs is preferred by some people.

Some of it is for research. They trap and study the feral hogs in order to find ways to control the population.

Me, I'd like the chance to hunt them. I hear the small ones are tasty.

Hogs gone wild is dramatized B.S. for entertainment purposes. Catching them with Dogs, and Knifing them, is popular here in Texas for some folks. A knife is used amongst dogs because; (1.) You don't want to risk shooting your dog, and (2.) after a shot or two, the dog would start turning loose of the hog as soon as he got a glimpse of the gun because he hates the muzzle blast in close proximity to his ears. As for whats humane? I wouldn't care if they used Flamethrowers if it would effectively rid the country of them.

I watched two episodes last night. What a bunch of mamby pamby PC CRAP!! And talk about over dramatized, my god! I think I'm going to have to go out there and show these pretty boys how it's done. All I need is 4X4 a case of ammo and maybe one or two good bay dogs. My kill ratio is about 2000% better than these idiots are getting.

Some people want

them. In Hawaii the outfitters/guides like the exotics, pigs, axis deer, goats, etc. despite the damage they do to the endemic flora and fauna because they can charge hunters. The feral hogs there are largely European stock introduced after Cook "discovered" the islands. They are much larger than the Asian suids introduced by the Polynesians. Their wallows hold water in which mosquitoes breed, the skeeters carry avian malaria which kills off native birds.

I like watching that show. Yep, they sometimes overstate the danger of wild hogs: However, make no mistake about it: A big hog can kill you graveyard dead.

i've been chased by several hogs. Last week i parked my truck and got out to admire a sow that was in the trap. Wrong answer; a big black boar was lying in the tall grass near the trap and he came after me. Good thing the truck was only a few yards away.

Last year i gave away over 40 wild hogs. Some were processed at my expense and given to the food bank; the rest were given to folks who needed the meat. Problem is that most folks want a clean skinned hog. Field dressing and skinning three or four hogs when the temperature is less than 20F will peg out the fun meter.

That was the most uninformed, ignorant show I have ever watched.

I take it that you never saw Pig Bomb or the Monster Quest episode dedicated to giant hogs.

It doesn't have to be a big hog to kill you. With that said, people are rarely killed by hogs, feral or otherwise. Most of the folks who get hurt by feral hogs get hurt by hogs they are trying to harm, so the hog is actually acting in self defense.

If they were cuter, a lot more people would be getting hurt by them, trying to feed them like they do bears and wolves. Fortunately, most people find them somewhat repulsive.

DNS, nice link with the blueservo.net site. I have never seen that one.

I haven't been around hogs a lot, but the ones that I have I trusted less than any mean "mama" cow that I have been around.

Not defending the actions of those on the show, but quite a lot of the folks who go after the hogs like to catch them alive. The main reason is the meat will start to spoil pretty quick if not dealt with and put on ice. It just isn't prudent to haul around several coolers along with your dogs or what ever through the brush while out chasing them around. Some folks like to haul them back to a pen, and feed them out for a month or so with sweet corn to somewhat purge their system.

Personally, I have grown more against hunting with the dogs. Yea they get one or two but they usually disperse the pack while getting on one hog. Then you might have to chase them a half mile or more through the thickest crap in the area only to get one more or possibly not even that. I would much rather have them out in the open under a feeder, or out in a wide open pasture where I can get more than one at a time. For some it's all about the thrill of the chase, for me, it's about putting as many as I can down, and if I want any, I will deal with them then.

Using dogs...has its place, but its largely "sport". Unless you are hunting under high fence...you will not do much with dogs... except catch one or two, while at the same time educating and dispersing the rest.

The hogs around here are getting very "Dog Savvy". As soon as they hear a truck and trailer come rattling in, they are GONE, let alone hear the dogs bark.

Hog Dogger's are having a difficult time (locally)...finding places to run their dogs. Many of them have worn out their welcome by running their dogs on small parcels of land...which results in the dogs wandering onto neighboring land...(where they don't have permission to be).

We employ most methods.... while trying to control Feral Hogs (including dogs on occasion), but Trapping, Shooting over bait sites and snaring...will get you more hogs... than Hog Dogger's have ever dreamed about.

Like you, I am only interested in killing as many of these pests as is possible.

The Hog Dogger's actually want the pigs around to help perpetuate their sport, so we are somewhat at odds.

I hear what your saying Flint, and have been with a few folks that feel the fence is simply a hindrance when they are after their dogs. I have also been alone and come upon close to a dozen or so folks hog hunting with their dogs on my friends property, and had to deal with them as well. Not a good place to be in for sure.

I don't mind if they want to run them but I do mind them trespassing and poaching. It usually leads to things coming up missing, maybe not from the dogs owners but possibly from someone along for the hunt coming back later.

The hogs have been keeping under the radar around our place near Palestine, we only see tracks and darn few of them as of late. They will slip up though and hopefully I will be there when they do.

Take care and keep up the good work.
